I had this, felt soooo much better afterwards. Took about 2 months to recover to normal ish, but so worth it .
you’ll be fine op

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 01/06/2022 19:10

It changed my life, although I was similarly petrified beforehand. I told them to take my ovaries too, so started HRT 2 weeks post op.

Antarcticant · 01/06/2022 19:14

I had one 5 years ago - abdominal - ovaries came out as well - and it was one of the best things I ever did. It freed me from years of pain and terrible periods.

i am petrified of being put to sleep and not waking up

I honestly found the GA very pleasant; drifted off no problems. I had an epidural just beforehand. I don't remember much from that going in, to coming round after the operation.

I do hope nothing is seriously wrong, but it's better to know what's going on so you can be treated, than to be worrying because they are not able to diagnose you.

told they will try to save my ovaries

I hope they will - they might be able to save one if not both. Unfortunately mine were too damaged to keep. I don't really miss them now I have got over the initial menopause phase.

just nervous scared and worried

It would be strange if you weren't scared and worried. Everyone is different but my operation really wasn't that bad. I was home within 2 days and back to work 7 weeks later. Lying on the sofa not feeling any expectation of doing anything was actually quite pleasant.

If you have any specific queries I will happily try to answer them for you based on what happened to me Flowers

I had a hysterectomy nearly three years ago. When I say it changed my life I can't actually put into words just how much. I had endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids. The consultant said my uterus nearly walked out it it was so bad. I was anxious beforehand as my kids were young and I was worried something would go wrong but it didn't and like another poster it took about two months to be fully recovered. Best of luck with it!

Antarcticant · 01/06/2022 19:20

The consultant said my uterus nearly walked out it it was so bad.

I had exactly the same kind of uterus but my consultant sadly didn't have such a picturesque turn of phrase!

That should easily see you through to the 'pottering about' stage - I was walking about quite well after a week.

Although it's quite a big operation, it's routine in the sense that it's commonly performed - the surgeons will know exactly what they are doing - so try to focus on the positives and how good you will feel when it's behind you.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 19:42

Thankyou I’m really trying too I think it’s just so close now

I was in less than 3 days. Operation was at midday - catheter came out at 11am the following day and I had a wee and a shower. Then in the afternoon I managed to get dressed and go out to the hospital grounds - because I was gasping for a cigarette Blush. I was able to go home the following day, about midday by the time the discharge faff was done.

Get your hubby to bring a pillow when he's taking you home - if you hold it to your middle you won't feel the bumps in the road as much.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 19:44

I’ll put the pillow for car on my list as we live a good 1 hour from hospital
did u stay in bed when you got home or sit up etc x

See how you feel. I managed to go out for a meal - 40 minute round trip - a week after my operation but I was pretty knackered afterwards. The tiredness is like nothing else, but I found it came in waves. You might find it uncomfortable sitting in the car for so long at that early stage. Don't push yourself to do too much, too soon - listen to what your body is telling you.

Littlemissprosecco · 01/06/2022 19:53

Sitting up and moving is fine, just get hubby to drive carefully round bends!
i pottered round the house as soon as I got home as I couldn’t just Sit in bed. I was also 39, was in hospital for 24 hrs. Was my 49th the day I got out! But because of the op everyone forgot, I’ve still not forgiven them.
OP, it is scary, but everyone’s there to look after you, ask them for what you need, don’t be embarrassed, you’ll get through this and be all the better for it. Just be patient, give yourself recovery time. You’ve got kids…… I’d milk it for as long as you can!!!
as soon as you show them you’re ok, they’ll take that mile

Littlemissprosecco · 01/06/2022 19:54

I made myself a 'recovery nest' on the sofa. My operation was in December so I was mainly on the sofa surrounded by pillows and blankets, propped up with my legs up, everything in easy reach, laptop, phone, TV remote etc. so I only had to get up to go to the loo and I could snooze when I wanted to.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 19:55

Yeah I think it might be too soon as less than a week all family have said so
I can’t wait for the whole no monthly’s but worried about if they take my ovaries and early menopause etc as 39 still seems little soon for that
and worried on weight gain etc as read that can happen too xx

I had a hysterectomy 12 years ago, had it done keyhole, was only in hospital 16 hours & was out & about 3 days later.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 19:58

Thankyou both so much for reassurance and kind words I already feel more at ease speaking to people who have gone through this
takes a load off your mind xx

OP posts:
Antarcticant · 01/06/2022 20:00

I was 42. If your ovaries come out, talk to your consultant about HRT to see if it's an option.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 20:02

I wish I could do keyhole they told me recovering is better with that but due to adhesions and everything basically stuck to everything they need to open me up but said it should be across my c section scar unless they need more room and they may go down hoping it’s just along my existing scar though
they said minimum 2 nights when I did pre op Monday just gone
got COVID test Friday then isolate till mon at 7 am

OP posts:
Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 20:03

Will do @Antarcticant
not massively thought about it as hoping it’s not going to come to that but I should be prepared xx

OP posts:
Antarcticant · 01/06/2022 20:08

Mine was fairly small incision - I hadn't had a C-section but it's in exactly the same place they do them across the top of my pelvis The scar is hardly visible now - it's just a pale line. I left it well alone; kept the dressing on and showered around it then eventually the stitches just dissolved.

Kimmismth · 01/06/2022 20:17

👍I will do that
my bags are all packed now think I’ve got everything I need
probs took too much but due to no visitors and living so far from hospital didn’t wanna run out xx

Don't forget to take some sanitary towels if you don't want hospital issue ones. You will bleed from your vagina as you heal - not heavy bleeding like a period but a trickle of light blood. Once this stops you have the joy of never having to buy or wear period products again!
