I whimped out getting the coil

Well that was horrific. Just as they stretched my womb I had to stop, now I'm so annoyed because it was so close to being over.

I'm going back on Wednesday to have a local anaesthetic needle beforehand, which I'm also now dreading.

Any words of advice? I'm quite annoyed at myself but it was intense pressure and I wasn't sure if I could cope anymore.

Ugh why is it so stressful.
Sorry for the rant. I took the morning off work for nothing Sad

They should offer the pain relief from the start. I think you’re brave to have got as far as you did.

OldTinHat · 01/11/2021 14:38

Is that your only option? My local clinic tried to railroad me into having the coil at 45 but I refused. I've since been on the mini pill which is fantastic.

saltontoast · 01/11/2021 17:32

I wanted something non-hormonal, I don't think I could trust myself to take the pill everyday, I have two under two and a stressful job so I imagine my scatty brain would struggle to remember Sad

I didn't think it would hurt so much

I've tried to have one inserted three times!
Too painful for me each time... so don't feel bad - it's not great is it?

If you're determined you can have it done with anaesthetic.

I'd have to have general anaesthetic and I just don't want to do that but it was offered.

UnusuallyUsual · 01/11/2021 17:51

I always have a paracetamol half hour before my appointment and find it practically pain free.

iwishiwasafish · 01/11/2021 17:58

I went for “assessment and information”, was told she would “need to take a look”, and she went ahead and inserted the coil. No consent. Very painful. Was just handed a leaflet afterwards. I actually had to then go away and decide if I wanted to keep it, and decided on balance I wasn’t brave enough to have it removed.

That was 5 years ago. I am now waiting to have it replaced as it’s at the end of its life, but absolutely dreading it because I feel I was violated the first time.

@iwishiwasafish
Omg this is horrific!
My Aunty nearly died due to the coil but
I'm sure it was a very very rare occurrence so the fact you had one without your consent is so bad
I would never have one
They badger me every time I go in

Lynne1Cat · 01/11/2021 18:24

I was pressured into having the Mirena coil "to help" with terribly heavy periods, at the age of 54! It didn't help at all, and I found it so painful, even weeks after having it put in, that I got my GP to remove it. Could you have the Depo injection?

That's nice for you, glad it was so easy.

Not all of us are so lucky!

BiscuitLover09876 · 01/11/2021 18:40

I read an article recently stating how horrific it is that women aren't offered pain relief at the start. Imagine if men had it.

We need to speak up more about this.

Don't be annoyed at yourself for this!

bumpertobumper · 01/11/2021 18:47

@KenAddams the copper coil has no hormones.
Mirena does.

Roselilly36 · 01/11/2021 18:56

I don’t blame you at all OP, I have had 3 coils fitted, absolute bloody agony each time. I can cope with pain, I had my two DS’ naturally, I would rather give birth than have another coil fitted. Thankfully this one will take me through the menopause. I have the mirena as my periods were so heavy, no periods have been worth the pain, I have to say. Feminax ultra was what my GP recommended that I take before the fitting. Good luck.

boymum88 · 01/11/2021 18:57

Just had a mirena fitted they advised to take painkillers an hr before the appointment, to help with pain and reduce the risk of expulsion. I found the speculum the most uncomfortable part, couldn't even tell when he measured and Inserted the coil, just tired to think about my breathing / taking deep breaths not punching him in the face🤦‍♀️
Make sure to take pain relief before you go, the local is goona sting for 10-20 secs. Not sure what you mean by stretching your womb, they do not stretch your womb to insert a coil x

That’s horrific OP, so sorry that happened to you.
saltontoast · 01/11/2021 19:00

It was the stretching of the womb, the pain was so deep and heavy I just wanted to curl up Sad

LadyHalesBroach · 01/11/2021 19:02

I screamed the whole way through having my copper coil. They didn’t tell me they’d do that stretchy cervix thing.

I’m about to have a c section and have put in a request that they insert my second there and then. Basically unless I have a spinal block, I’m not having a coil.

KenAddams · 01/11/2021 19:08

See I said this to the doctor when went for mine and was made out to be a fool and told they all had them, I was sure the copper one didn't thanks bumper

They don't stretch your womb They do open your cervix a very little way but it sounds like you're very sensitive to pain. If you try again you should have pain relief beforehand.
ThatsNotMyReindeer · 01/11/2021 19:11

I had mine done last week by a gynaecologist and honestly didn't even feel it go in, unlike the ones done at the serial health clinic

TurnUpTurnip · 01/11/2021 19:12

The thought of them really freaks me out, i couldn’t have one

bellsbuss · 01/11/2021 19:12

Just the thought of a coil makes my fanny clench up Blush

I know what you mean by the pain OP, my cervix is really far back, always is, during my induction with DC2 they had to stretch it and pull it forwards and it was agony and I had the copper coil put in 4 years ago, I use co-codamel, some meditation during and I use music too. Hope it goes okay, it can be painful Thanks

TheLadyhasarrived · 01/11/2021 19:15

I had 2 solpadiene max before my most recent one, previously I’ve gone into cervical shock and it was horrendous.
After the solpadiene it was ok, I was on my little pink cocodamol cloud and it all went very calmly.
