I whimped out getting the coil

Well that was horrific. Just as they stretched my womb I had to stop, now I'm so annoyed because it was so close to being over.

I'm going back on Wednesday to have a local anaesthetic needle beforehand, which I'm also now dreading.

Any words of advice? I'm quite annoyed at myself but it was intense pressure and I wasn't sure if I could cope anymore.

Ugh why is it so stressful.
Sorry for the rant. I took the morning off work for nothing Sad

@fedup078 exactly! Simply wouldn’t happen. I’m amused by the paracetamol suggestion, what good would that be?! Zero chance of me ever having the coil

Suzysuz · 02/11/2021 11:20

I've got my mirena fitting due next week... it's a real mix for women it seems that find it excruciating ranging to okay. I am worried as my son was via c section, but also my periods are so painful and clotty that I need to try this....
I'm having it done while on period so am hoping that helps, it's at the sexual health clinic, and I'll be taking some cocodemol I have from a previous back injury to have that in my system - and also taking up the tip on food/blood sugars mentioned above....

Pain for women in procedures are often minimised. Reminds me of NCT classes talking about pressure during contractions with no mention of pain.

People experience pain differently and just because some women do fine without pain killers or a couple of paracetamol doesn't mean that others shouldn't get sufficient pain relief for the pain they experience.

I have had loads of smear tests in my adult life, apart form one I had post partum where the pain was unbearable and I wish there was gas and air available.

TwoPaperAirplanes · 02/11/2021 12:34

My mirena was fitted by a lovely female gp who has been doing them for years. I wouldn't call it a pleasant experience but there was very little pain as I was relaxed and comfortable.

Women being expected to just "put up" with pain due to medical procedures such as coil fittings, smear tests or during childbirth is disgusting and degrading, never mind how many are treated during examinations post sexual assault.

@saltontoast could you ask for a different practitioner? I'm sorry it hurt you so much Thanks

I agree with others up thread - you did not ‘wimp out’. Don’t let anyone minimise your pain (including some on here).

There are clearly a range of factors involved in determining whether this is painful or not, and how much, ranging from whether one has ever had a vaginal birth, to the skill of the professional doing the fitting, and frankly just an element of ‘we are all different and have different bodies and experiences’.

But as shown by others on this thread, you are far from alone in finding it excruciatingly painful. As an aside I am very cross that this is routinely offered without pain relief. Women’s pain is not taken seriously enough!!

2nd try today at 9am. Over indulged in wine last night to settle nerves, bad idea. Hopefully it all goes okay, I'm dreading it

It's done! Local anaesthetic was amazing Grin

Oh can you get a local anaesthetic for it? Where did you get it down? GP or sexual health clinic etc

Viviennemary · 03/11/2021 09:50

I dont blame you. Coils can cause huge problems. Even years after they're fitted. I would never have one.

saltontoast · 03/11/2021 11:14

@black2black it was at the sexual health clinic by the consultant

Just for balance I had the mirena fitted, with no pain and its really made a huge difference to my previously very heavy periods. I'm sorry that others were not so lucky.

black2black · 03/11/2021 15:12

Thanks @saltontoast I’ve just rang to book an appointment and asked if I can have local anaesthetic. They said I can phew

Timeflyin · 03/11/2021 15:29

@Carlissa

I've tried to have one inserted three times! Too painful for me each time... so don't feel bad - it's not great is it?

If you're determined you can have it done with anaesthetic.

I'd have to have general anaesthetic and I just don't want to do that but it was offered.

They offered you a general anaesthetic? Do you mean local anaesthetic? I had a coil fitted once and found it very painful (thanks dsis who told me it was just the same as a smear). If I was to have one again would definitely take the local anaesthetic
