I whimped out getting the coil

Well that was horrific. Just as they stretched my womb I had to stop, now I'm so annoyed because it was so close to being over.

I'm going back on Wednesday to have a local anaesthetic needle beforehand, which I'm also now dreading.

Any words of advice? I'm quite annoyed at myself but it was intense pressure and I wasn't sure if I could cope anymore.

Ugh why is it so stressful.
Sorry for the rant. I took the morning off work for nothing Sad

They do open your cervix a very little way but it sounds like you're very sensitive to pain nope it sounds like you aren’t.

iloveayankeecandle · 01/11/2021 19:18

I ba had one for a couple
Of years. Insertion was fine. I took two ibuprofen beforehand and felt fine after.
However the nurse couldn't get it out and I ended up going to hospital to get it out. That was horrific.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 01/11/2021 19:18

There's an awful lot of minimising on this thread Hmm
I've had 2, the first was horrific, literally the most painful thing I've ever experienced (probably due to the uncaring wankers that put it in and treated me as an inconvenience)
The second I barely felt. Most likely because I was treated with kindness and care.
Please don't make out that people have low pain thresholds or are sensitive to pain. It's that kind of comment that makes us ladies put up and shut up. We should have adequate pain relief as standard and it's absolutely disgusting that we are forced to go through such painful procedures without.

Fumnudge · 01/11/2021 19:20

My cervix tends to go in to spasm so it depended on the skill of the inserter! One doctor gave up and I had to have it done with local anesthetic in hospital.

I really do not like needles but I honestly didn't feel the needle go in at all and felt absolutely nothing when they put the coil in, worked a treat.
So please try not to worry or over think it.

It's not the majority experience to feel that level of pain. The vast majority of women feel little or no pain.
minimall · 01/11/2021 19:22

@iwishiwasafish

I went for “assessment and information”, was told she would “need to take a look”, and she went ahead and inserted the coil. No consent. Very painful. Was just handed a leaflet afterwards. I actually had to then go away and decide if I wanted to keep it, and decided on balance I wasn’t brave enough to have it removed.

That was 5 years ago. I am now waiting to have it replaced as it’s at the end of its life, but absolutely dreading it because I feel I was violated the first time.

Wtf

Thats horrendous

femfemlicious · 01/11/2021 19:27

Oh my God what does it mean stretch your womb😭. Im meant to be going for mirena coil tomorrow.

They don't stretch your womb They open the cervix a little bit to put the coil in. It's not painless but the level of pain most women feel is 'discomfort' rather than actual pain.
PollyRae16 · 01/11/2021 19:31

Can't bring myself to trust the cool ever since my friends busted its way out of her uterus and she ended up pregnant 🤦🏼‍♀️

HappyMeal564 · 01/11/2021 19:32

It was painful before I had a baby. Didn't feel a thing now I'm all stretched 😂 hope it goes well, chicane a nice bath afterwards

HappyMeal564 · 01/11/2021 19:33

Chocolate not chicane 😂

PollyRae16 · 01/11/2021 19:33

Coil* bloody autocorrect!

needtodrinkmore · 01/11/2021 19:33

@iwishiwasafish are you actually kidding me? That's disgusting, how on earth did you manage to get over that?

VirgilStarkwell · 01/11/2021 19:35

I think the OP means the bit where they measure your womb. I always found that horribly painful, like immediate nasty period cramps.

I have been experiencing the joys of vaginal atrophy for a few years now, so when my Mirena was to be changed this year, it was such agony (and a hella lot of tug-of-war type yanking from the doctor) having it out, that I refused a new one and am now on the pill instead.

Best of luck with the next attempt.

Hoppinggreen · 01/11/2021 19:37

I recently visited a Private Gynae with DD and she said she wouldn’t even consider doing one to someone who hadn’t had a VB without a General and for anyone who had she would use local and possibly sedation

That used to be the standard, if you hadn't given birth it wasn't even considered due to how painful it is. Now they don't give a shit because they realised it's cheap.
RedCarsGoFaster · 01/11/2021 19:40

@saltontoast I had my new one put in 3 weeks ago. I screamed, sweated and practically hyperventilated. The first one I had done (10+yrs ago) was almost painless.

I'm furious with the GP. She didn't tell me anything about what she was doing, didn't answer my questions like "is it in?" (so I knew what the fuck was still to come) and was cold as hell. I'll go back to GU Med / family planning in future - not a GP who holds 2 bloody clinics a year.

Why the fuck gas and air isn't offered at the very bloody least, I've no idea.

Saturday just gone was also awful - cramping so bad I couldn't stand and was sobbing for an hour. I thought the fucking thing was trying to force its way out. Still not sure it isn't. I was in so much pain on the day of the insertion and this weekend, that I've been terrified she's perforated my womb (but then admittedly, I refused DH's insistence to go back to get someone tolook because it's too fucking painful).

@Ducksareruiningmypatio
I don't know how true it is but there was another thread recently where quite a few ppl said the coil is pushed so much because they get financial incentives from the companies that make them .

Franca123 · 01/11/2021 19:42

I don't trust doctors who want to anything down there when they tell you take over the counter painkillers beforehand. Lesson I learned the very hard way from a brutal hysteroscopy. Barbarians the lot of them.

seb342 · 01/11/2021 19:43

OP I hope that the next attempt is successful. I too had the copper coil due to not wanting hormones and it's been amazing for me. I feel like a cloud has been lifted and it was definitely worth the insertion process.

Franca123 · 01/11/2021 19:44

We're left using condoms with two children under 3. Maybe I should ask the GP if they'll do it with proper anaesthetic?

I honestly think that's true. I had a copper coil as I've had such bed experiences with hormonal contraception.
I literally had a speculum hanging out of me and they were still trying to push the mirena.

It's immediately pushed on women with gynae problems with precious little alternatives investigated. I've had friends (with valid reasons to avoid the mirena) forced to "try" it before any other options would even be entertained.
Makes you ask why.

MBM18 · 01/11/2021 19:48

For me I've always found it depends which doctor fits it.

First time (my favourite doctor): minimal pain, over within seconds
Second time (different doctor): absolute agony, had to tell her to stop and not try again
Third time (favourite doctor): again, minimal pain and over within seconds

Thirtyrock39 · 01/11/2021 19:49

I am not very good with pain but found having a coil fitted unpleasant but bearable . I definitely think a bit of gas and air wouldn't go amiss but I think it's the idea of what's happening makes it seem worse. It wasn't much worse than a smear test in many ways but I'd be nervous to have it again as It was sore after so in that way worse than a smear test
Having it removed was very easy and pain free though

To be fair that Gynae I mentioned said that most female Gynaes she knows have them, as do a lot of Gynae nurses.
She said she had one herself
