So this is a post of desperation. My Dd 5yo is awake screaming that her labia, vagina and whole general area are hurting. This is the 4th night in a row. She's actually had a really horrible virus so the last few nights she's been that unwell that she's fallen back asleep. However now she's feeling a bit better she is properly screaming the house down. There's nothing to see. I have checked and rechecked for worms. I'm alternating Calpol and ibuprofen anyway for her visits symptoms on doctors advice so can't go there. I've tried sudocrem, makes no difference. I googled and think it could be vaginosis maybe. Also found numerous other threads on other sites describing similar symptoms but no solutions given. I spoke to the pharmacist today and she said take her to the doctor next week, may need a swab. But what could this be and what can I do in the meantime?! She's so upset!

Scratch that! Sorry - it’s late and I rushed to write my post because it seemed urgent.
Hope you and DD are okay OP Flowers

The worms leave a sticky residue on the skin which causes itching so a shower (not a bath as the eggs will float and stay on her skin) will be very helpful.

Northernsoullover · 08/12/2019 02:02

I had threadworms as a child. I can still remember the pain. Which is just as well because I caught them last year. I'm late 40s FFS Shock
I know you have been advised to sterilise your house and that's your choice but I just did my bed and in use towels. That was enough. I did clean my hard surfaces but I do those regularly anyway.
Non brand tablets are cheaper than Ovex. I'd do the whole family. I now have a supply in the bathroom cabinet just in case.

Glad you at least know what the problem is.... I was jumping to some REALLY horrible conclusions for a moment. (*sorry, but as a nurse, you can’t help but go there!) Worms are feisty little blight era but easily treated. Definitely dose the whole family and then remember re-dose on the recommended day after so that you kill the next lot of unhatched eggs. (Something odd like 11days later last time I treated my kids.) Wash all the bedding and toys with hot water and chuck in the dryer if you have one. Scrub and trim nails. (Almost makes you want to bleach everything doesn’t it? Won’t work though!) Don’t beat yourself up, OP. Kids get them. They’re a normal part of growing up and studies show that the little fuckers are actually great for boosting immunity, believe it or not.

I have to say though what I saw was very small, Internet says threadworms are 1cm. It defo wasn't that long, more like a 5mm max.

Just pop the tablet/medicine. It won't harm. Also if they are small they could be young...

Sexnotgender · 08/12/2019 07:20

Hope the worm treatment works soon, I had no idea the little fuckers could migrate!!

Schmoozer · 08/12/2019 07:22

Like a rice grain ? Threadworms horrible little gits poor DD
Ovex is magic though ! Works so well, our school does a letter to parents to say some children have had threadworms check and treat your children, because often they can go round and round and round at school 😩

BuckingFrolics · 08/12/2019 07:46

Treat the whole family, however strongly they insist they don't have worms. They probably will (including you). Just makes you think of how blooming miserable and painful life must have been before modern medicine.

Sickoffamilydrama · 08/12/2019 09:59

Thought it would be them, I started to make my DD wash their bottoms first thing in the morning so they'd get rid of any eggs & Kept reminding them to wash their hands.

I know a few people have said no soap but we found that it was still sore without using it so I figured that without it wasn't washing off the mucus the threadworm releases that is irritating, whereas with a bit of soap they felt better. I know you have to be careful of PH on delicate skin but it did really help.

Goddamn worms!!! Bastards. One tablet used to do the job for our kids (still does), but do all of you.

I used to also smother the anus in Vaseline in Alte afternoon to prevent the later issues when they come out. Wee fuckers.

Also one of my daughters suffered from thrush from being a toddler so this does happen. I'd recommend cutting out all wash products.

blackcat86 · 08/12/2019 14:02

This has been an eye opener for me. I have a 15 month old DD and people with school age DC keep warning me about the dreaded worms....

Indecisivelurcher · 08/12/2019 15:09

So those in the know, am I best off expecting another bad night tonight? Wormers administered at 10:30am...

Schmoozer · 08/12/2019 16:02

You might be ok !! It’s good stuff 😊

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 08/12/2019 16:16

My daughter had this too and was fine on the second night after treatment.

Indecisivelurcher · 08/12/2019 21:22

We've been to the out of hours tonight because she was so distressed, and the doctor there thinks she's got a uti on top of everything else.

OP posts:
MrsJoshNavidi · 08/12/2019 21:58

My DD used to get this regularly when she was small. She'd wake up in the night crying and screaming.
We tried everything but what helped most was sitting in a warm bath.
We never found out what it was, and she grew out of it eventually.

mathanxiety · 09/12/2019 02:21

It's very possible that she has a UTI on top of the worms.

You need to impress on her the importance of proper wiping, followed by hand washing.

It's no coincidence that kids get worms when they start school. They use the loo and do not wipe properly, get itchy, scratch, don't wash hands. Or wipe and run, without washing hands. Result = worms. And they spread easily.

Ask her if she is allowed to go to the loo in school or if she holds it in for long stretches. Make sure she knows to wipe front to back, and thoroughly.

justilou1 · 09/12/2019 10:47

She probably has, from poking and scratching at her bits to try and get the worms away, the poor love.

Indecisivelurcher · 09/12/2019 19:59

Bastards worms are still alive and having a proper party up there!!!! And I've caught them too!!!!!!! 🤮

legalseagull · 09/12/2019 20:07

Oh no!!!!!!! How awful. Is your DD not feeling better at all?!

Indecisivelurcher · 10/12/2019 08:58

Her urine sample came back clear so no uti. She's still really dizzy and being sick because of it. She's taking amoxicillin because there's a chance it's an inner ear infection. One ear was red. However I strongly suspect its viral. She's not so distressed which is one good thing. I'm hoping our extra friends are now dead!!!

OP posts:
FoamingAtTheUterus · 10/12/2019 09:12

The amoxicillin can cause thrush as well, it's pretty likely she'll get it as she's been so irritated down below. It won't harm to put some canestan on, the poor thing. :/

justilou1 · 10/12/2019 11:35

That poor kid’s whole immune system is messed up right now. I would recommend nuking everything with worming treatment, antibiotics for the UTI, thrush medication and then a comprehensive reintroduction of healthy gut bacteria. (I live in Australia, so the brands are different). Ask your chemist which brands are reputable and have the most comprehensive range of gut bacteria to rebuild her immune system after all of this. Poor bunny probably feels vile!!! I know it’s hard, but for the time-being I would try and limit sugars in her diet to those naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables.
I would limit juices (if you must, dilute them a LOT). No soft drinks or squash, etc. It feeds these bugs and throws the gut out whack.

justilou1 · 10/12/2019 11:36

Btw, no harm double-treating the worms.
