Am just coming to the end of this book and think it's excellent. Anyone else read it? I could thoroughly recommend it.

What's it about?

It centres around a couple of black maids in Mississippi in the 1960s and tells their story - how they're treated by the white families they work for, as well as society in general. Each chapter is written from a different character's perspective.

It's particularly interesting as it is set in the 1960's when the rest of America was slowly waking up to the Civil Rights movement, but Jackson, Mississippi was refusing to acknowledge that anything was wrong

I am also just near the end. It's a brilliant book, the way she writes in the vernacular is very clever.

We did this for our book group and we all adored it. I read a large part of it out loud (in a Southern drawl) to DD (9) and she loved it too. Wonderful, memorable characters, especially Aibileen. I loved her relationship with Mae Mobley .

Dolly - funny you should mention you did it for your book club - its the first book I've read in ages that I've felt I've wanted to discuss with someone (so in the absence of a book club, good old MN!

ggirl - the writing is so clever..

We did it for our book club too. It is frightening to think that it is set in the early 1960's - not that long ago.
