What shall I look for in the library tomorrow please? I am currently reduced to re-reads of The Famous Five.

Things I want my daughters to know OR anything by Mitch Albom

janeite · 15/05/2010 21:18

Thank you. Have read 'Tuesdays With Morrie' and 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven' and, to my surprise, loved both of them.

What is 'Things I Want My Daughters To Know' about?

OP posts:
janeite · 15/05/2010 21:18

Just googled it - think I'd hate it but thanks anyway.

florencerusty · 16/05/2010 11:20

what do you tend to read?

TheFoosa · 16/05/2010 11:23

there is a new Bill Bryson out soon - might be a while for the library though
here

TheFoosa · 16/05/2010 11:24

What about Sum

TheFoosa · 16/05/2010 11:27

I have just bought this

janeite · 16/05/2010 15:27

Thank you - the Bryson looks great. I will buy that, so no need to wait for the library.

I like lots of things but am very fussy - Austen and King are my favourites. I like Neil Gaiman, some Pratchet, history books, anything to do with long and dangerous journeys eg: Captain Cook, polar exploration etc, Evelyn Waugh (but have read them all)...erm..I liked Half Of A Yellow Sun recently.

basically anything that isn't chick-lit or literary pretentious fiction. Oh and I like old stuff - The Moonstone, Doyle etc.

Sorry no - I dislike him based on the two I have read - The Remains Of The Day and the one about breeding children for body parts, both of which I hated. But thank you anyway.

Other things I like include: CJ Sansom / Frank Tallis (although the most recent two have annoyed me) / anything to do with the history of food in fact, anything to do with food!

OP posts:
janeite · 16/05/2010 15:38

Oh dear. To be fair, I am the only person I know who has read it and not liked it.

Slightly left-field, but have you read Emma Goldman's autobiog "Living my Life" which is a favourite of mine (I like Austen & history books). It is amazingly readable and entertaining as well as interesting.

janeite · 16/05/2010 15:51

Never heard of her - will google. Thank you.

Takver · 16/05/2010 15:54

Have also just thought - assume you have read 'Diary of a Provincial Lady' & EM Delafield's various other books?

janeite · 16/05/2010 15:55

Nope - never heard of them either!

OP posts:
Takver · 16/05/2010 16:00

Forget Emma Goldman - read the Provincial Lady!!! I will eat my copy if you are a JA fan & don't like her

Takver · 16/05/2010 16:01

Actually - perhaps a better test - do you like Cold Comfort Farm?
