dh got me a kindle for my birthday I've got quite a few books in my amazon wishlist, but am open to some more suggestions - literary fiction rather than chicklit or Dan Brown type stuff

The last 5 books I"ve read are Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys, Philip Kerr's The One from the Other, Carry on Jeeves, A Case of Exploding Mangoes (can't remember the author) and White Tiger by Arvind somebody, just to give you an idea of the range of things I like

recommendations very happily received

Is the kindle any good? I really fancy one but wonder if it will be in the bottom of the cupboard with some other appliances of the minute!

I loved Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson.

It is a historical novel that for some bizarre reason is always shelved under science fiction, which means that it is lost to a large part of its potential audience.

Stephenson does write science fiction. In fact, Second Life was initially imagined by him, and then invented by fans who read the book and loved it.

It is set around the Charles I period and is packed full of ideas about science/ history of science/ politics/ life.

A friend who is a history don at Oxford tihnks he must have used primary sources for some of his research, because he portrays it so accurately.

It is massively long, and you have to hang in there when you start, but all of a sudden you will be hooked.

Best news is that it is the first part of a trilogy. The second book, written some years ago, describes accurately a credit crunch.

I love my Kindle . Currently I'm reading the Stieg Larsson trilogy on it, and have a book on the electricity standards war and one on the history of probability to read next.

how irritating - you can't buy Quicksilver from the UK, but for some bizarre reason you can buy the second volume in the trilogy - grrr
