I have read 84 Charing Cross Road umpteen times. I love it: The subject of books; the New York/London contrast; the wonderful humour of Helene Hanff's letters; her unbelievable generosity to complete strangers. Now, I've just seen the film with Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. I thought the film was great - a very clever translation of the letters into a narrative. But: where did they get the love story from? Did I miss something? I can see the longing for the London of literature in Hanff's letters, but a longing for Frank Doel? Please tell me I've not been misreading the letters all these years!
