Books about butlers trying to remember

'The Remains of the Day' is the only one I can remember but I think there is another, which is quite old.

Does anyone know of any other books with the butler/Boss relationship explored?

not Jeeves and Wooster, then?

Jeeves is not a butler. He is a gentleman's gentleman. (Though when need be he can buttle with the best.)

The Servant, by Robin Maugham. (made into a classic film starring Dirk Bogarde)

Admirable Creighton and Lord Peter Wimsey

Thanks all, esp The admirable; want to see the film now. I have a vg friend who describes himself as one of the last butlers in England; takes more pride in his job than anyone else I know (seriously).

When people come to stay at His House, the staff tip him; he made £300 cash last weekend. Don't know what ir think about that.
On the last visit, the guests wrote a 6 page gushing letter of thanks, mainly singing the praises of said Butler. The boss told my friend that they said thanks, but mf got the letter from the bin (his job) and read it to me. Love the idea of this Wooster getting jealous of his Jeeves, and I can see what a great literary device it is.

I still think there is a book that I can't remember.

One suggestion - 'Manservant and Maidservant' by Ivy Compton-Burnett - first published in 1947. The butler is called Bullivant and the family are the Lambs - I think it may have had an alternative title -'Bullivant and the Lambs'.
