tempted for the hols and am rather hoping it is a gripping read and not a dry history lesson.

Anyone read it?

OMG studies that at middle school, without much depth and found it really interesting. My dh would read it as he loves history. Is it an autobiography about him and the chinese communist party formation or something. soory but stopped history at 13.

Enid - I almost bought it for holiday reading, but thought it would be too depressing. I spent last year's hols reading Simon Sebag Montefiore's biog of Stalin, and that did not help to improve my mood. I have also read 'Hungry Ghosts', a book about the Chinese famine of the early 60s, so I'm not sure I'm in need of much more enlightenment about how dreadful Mao was. But I very much enjoyed Wild Swans, so I expect I shall read this book at some point.
