so leonardo , because of your reading style nobody else can have read it differently?

got the book saturday morning, finished it this evening.

as i said previously...its not war and peace.

charleepeters · 17/07/2005 22:22

I dont think The Harry Potter book is a subject to argue over - some people read quicker than others!

leonardodavinci · 17/07/2005 22:23

I know but would you admit that your dh did most of the child care this w/e as woud love to read it myself

ScummyMummy · 17/07/2005 22:23

Don't take it to heart, alexmum. Slower, concentrated readers can never understand skimmy, adhd-like speed reading I'm afraid! It's like religion/atheism debates. My partner is always testing me on the last page I've read because he doesn't believe I've really read it. He's right in a way- if it was Das Capital I wouldn't have taken it in at all unless I'd broken it down into small concentrated chunks. Harry Potter, however, is light enough for me to take in and enjoy immensely in a rushed skim read.

leonardodavinci · 17/07/2005 22:24

nobody is arguing it's just that children demand a lot of attention that's all and unless you have someone to do the looking after it isn't possible.

ScummyMummy · 17/07/2005 22:25

But my kids were in bed, leonardo!

happymerryberries · 17/07/2005 22:25

It is like comaping the mad dash of the 100m to the marathon isn't it?

I dashed through it at break neck speed, knowing full well that I will re-read it several times, starting , well now I suppose, as I have already read the first two chapters again to dd!....now that I do read word for word!

happymerryberries · 17/07/2005 22:26

The last book is about 24 hours unabridged by Stephen Fry on spoken word CDs. We will be listening to it when we drive to France this year!

happymerryberries · 17/07/2005 22:27

Oh and I think it depends a bit on the age of your kids. Mine atr 8 and 5 and spent the day playing with their bikes with their friends on the campsite. They felt anything but neglected

Lakota · 17/07/2005 22:34

It's definitely possible, I started it yesterday afternoon, finished at about 8 this evening, and I have a 4 month old (he's been bathed, fed and played with I promise!). It is a kids book and not exactly densely typed and I am a very fast reader, although my bath was somewhat icy by the time I got out (OK, I admit DH did last feed and bedtime). I have only read a pathetic handful of books since DS was born though, and used to average 1 every two days...

I would agree about re-reading or reminding yourself of the last book though - I didn't and had forgotten quite a lot.

I love your theory on Snape HMB!

HappyHuggy · 17/07/2005 22:53

My boys are 3 and 1 and i managed to read the whole book this afternoon and loved it - made me cry though

Linnet · 17/07/2005 23:17

I finished it tonight at 6pm. Read up to chapter 21 last night. Read another 3 or 4 chapters this morning while dd2 was having her nap and then finished it this afternoon when dd2 was having another nap. Dd1 is 7 and was playing quite happily by herself so not neglected.

I cried at the end and I have an idea who's initials they are but I won't say anything just now.

I hope we don't have to wait another 2 years for the next one I need to know what happens NOW!!!

sheepgomeep · 18/07/2005 10:06

yes it is possible leonardo. I went and got the book at midnight, spent until 3 in the morning reading it, went to sleep and woke up at half seven when the kids got up, sorted the kids out and managed to snatch the odd half hour here 10 minutes there throughout the day. The kids wee in bed by 7 and I finally managed to finish the book at half ten on sat night. I am a quick reader and I always have been plus the style in which the potter books are written means its quite easy to read and understand. Some books that are this long and shorter I couldn't do in that short time. The phillip Pullman 'His dark Materials' trilogy I couldn't read that quickly.
I am also a single parent and I had no one to have the kids (apart from my friend who stayed the night so i could go out and collect our books)
So yep it can be done

sheepgomeep · 18/07/2005 10:07

meant to say 'kids WERE in bed not wee

Lakota · 18/07/2005 14:17

Maybe Sirius' brother's initials?

SleepyJess · 18/07/2005 16:18

I flagged dpwn the postman on the way towards our house at 7.30am on Sat morning as I was on the way out with the kids (swimming club).. and said 'you haven't got a brown package for me have you?' and he resignedly delved into his bag and then triumphantly came up with my Harry Potter book from Amazon!

I didn't have the heard to tell him I was after my marked Open University assignment!!! LOL. Poor man had probably been accosted several times already...

Ailsa · 25/07/2005 00:03

DD1 finished reading this last night and told me what happened at the end (I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books). She can't tell DH because he is saving the book until he goes on holiday.

colditz · 25/07/2005 00:50

Yes leonado, it is entirely possible to read a 700 page book in 36 hours.

Stop accusing people of neglcting their children just because you are a slower reader.

How rude!

SoupDragon · 25/07/2005 10:04

I read the book in under 10 hours total. so phthrrrrup! Nyanyanya. Entirely possible LdV because I read bl**dy quickly. Used to freak out my teachers at school and my dad as it happens.

marthamoo · 25/07/2005 10:06

Oh I had to look for this thread and colditz has already bumped it so I don't feel bad abut posting too

I tied my kids up and locked them in the shed so I could finish it.

SoupDragon · 25/07/2005 10:08

I left mine in the car on the driveway.

suzywong · 25/07/2005 10:10
