Oh, someone posted a blog cartoon summary here that was frighteningly accurate and funny - I'll find it and link.

BellaBear · 17/01/2010 20:32

that was me! I'll look as well

Joolsiam · 17/01/2010 20:33

My obsessed sister bought me all 4 books for Christmas and I've become more and more hooked with each turn of the page I've had to force myself to put the books down and get some sleep - finally finished Breaking Dawn in the early hours of yesterday morning and read Midnight Sun today. I want MORE - want to see the baby grow up and want to hear more of the Edward perspective - that was a lovely way to tie it all together and fill in some of the gaps

Now feeling bereft, and am idly wondering whether the films will live up to my mental images .

I think I am with Team Edward at the moment

BellaBear · 17/01/2010 20:34

here but MAJOR spoilers

southeastastra · 17/01/2010 20:34

i'll have a read of the book then

my sister dragged took me to see new moon too, i dunno if i can be arsed

snigger · 17/01/2010 20:34

here - it's bloody hilarious. "Bite, bite, bite"

snigger · 17/01/2010 20:36

Bella, you must type like a vampire

Sandy22 · 17/01/2010 20:37

Juicy: please read the books before you watch the film as the books are far better.

Joolsiam: I think you are in need of some fan fiction - you need to find your way over to the twi-sluts thread .

Jacob might have the muscles but Edward has the eyes, the jaw, the hair, the long fingers to hmmm must stop right there and he also has the faboulous words.

BellaBear · 17/01/2010 20:37

haha snigger - I hadn't seen the first half, it's even funnier with that! You have to check out this and this!

(the last two links are only funny if you've read them)

fishie · 17/01/2010 20:39

haha that link is fab bella bear.

twilight books are about NUFFIN. they are well enough written that you can plod on through but the magical love story sailed straight past me.

bea · 17/01/2010 20:59

fave book was Eclipse... can't wait for the film!!!

lollipopmother · 17/01/2010 21:02

I'm totally hooked! I was bought the first three for Xmas and I've not been able to put them down, I am hopelessly in love with Edward Cullen but tbh I would have to tell him to sod off at some point, far too controlling, I'd take Jacob in the end. I finished the third book on Fri night and felt totally love sick because I couldn't get my hands on the fourth.

Whilst I find I absolutely have to read the whole book straight away and then the next and the next etc I don't think I'll read them again any time soon. They are excellently written, real page turners etc but essentially I am a Harry Potter fan (even though I'm now 27!) and I would say HP is better, yes it's for little children but over the series of the books you feel like you grow with the characters where as with Twilight I don't get that, it feels like no time has gone past as it were. The first book got on my nerves a bit because it's all love love love but the next two aren't anywhere near as sickly. Secondly, I get annoyed quite a bit by Bella who falls down a LOT and I just want to scream at her and tell her to get a grip, she clearly isn't good enough for Edward - I'd be far better!

lollipopmother · 17/01/2010 21:05

Oh, I saw the first film before I read any of the books, it's pretty pants. Ok, so RPatt grows on you in the end but I don't think it's casted brilliantly, I'm sure there are better looking people they could've gone for . Oh, and his acting is DIRE at the start, I thought he was having a heart attack when he first saw Bella and I didn't get it at all until I read the book which makes it perfectly clear what his problem is, poor poor poor.

Sandy22 · 17/01/2010 21:09

Oooh lollipop - soooo harsh - RP dire - come now you must be mistaken.

I will join the Twi-sluts when I've read the last book and the bit on her webpage, I don't want to see any spoilers hence why I've not taken a proper look at this thread. I hear that the last book is a bit bizarre and not as good as the others, I hope I'm not too disappointed.

Sandy22 - No, he was definitely awful! I got into it though and I did start to quite fancy him by the end, but that could just be the character he plays, I am desperately in love with Edward in the books, makes my heart ache and reminds me of when I was young! I have to say that RPatt did look rather fetching when he was all sparkly!!!

Sandy22 · 17/01/2010 21:20

Lollipop have a look at this www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsN74wuwaFk&feature=PlayList&p=FE5E36ADAE82E478&index=1. I too am in love with Edward but also love RP as well

LittleWhiteWolf · 17/01/2010 21:24

The books message is one of abstinence, primarily, and Bellas character is a basic Mary Sue (to use a fanfiction term).
Very simple story, very simple writing, definatly not gonna win any awards for amazing writing skills.

BUT they do make very good escapism (once you get past te ridiculous sparkly vamps thing ) and they're easy to read and re-read.

I wish they weren't aimed at teens as the story revolves around a very unhealthy love story and I would hate for my DD to hold it up as a paragon for the perfect love story. Much better to be a nice treat for older readers!

NoahAndTheWhale · 17/01/2010 21:24

My sister got me the first one for Christmas and I am part way through. Still feels a bit Sweet Dreams (or whatever those American teenage romances were called) but am willing to have to keep turning the pages

MumtoEliane · 17/01/2010 21:40

Schilke, I did the same! I loved the first two so much that I delayed reading the third. Now I am waiting for the fourth on paperback, can't wait!

I can't decide if I like Edward or Jacob best though

lollipopmother · 17/01/2010 21:47

Sandy - That Youtube is hilarious!!! Yes ok I take it back, he is fit! He looks a lot more like I imagine EC to look like in those pics than he does in the film though, at the start of the first one I think he looks a bit rotten tbh, but as I said, at the end he's hotting up nicely and I haven't seen the 2nd yet so I can't comment on that. I imagine Jacob to be seriously hot too though ..... is he in the films??

monkeyfeathers · 17/01/2010 21:55

I recently read all 4, not exactly sure why. The quality of storytelling definitely deteriorates throughout the series. The first 3 are ok, for what they are but I had to force myself to finish breaking dawn and found myself genuinely annoyed by stephenie meyers complete refusal to deal with any of the interesting issues that arise and focuses on brushing aside any possible problems (in incredibly frustrating ways). It all turns out so conveniently for Bella. I'd say more but it'd give the plot away.

Bella is possibly the worst example of a Mary sue character I've ever come across. In fact, all the characters are very under-characterised and too bloody perfect. The whole series is extremely superficial and bella's relationships are all extremely unhealthy. The language is also tediously repetitive.

To be honest, having actually read the books, the success of the series baffles me.

I haven't looked to check, but I'd be willing to bet that there is a lot of twilight fan fic that's of higher literary quality than the series itself.

lollipopmother · 17/01/2010 22:09

She does seem to like to use the word 'absurd' quite a lot, which I find quite odd!

lollipopmother · 17/01/2010 22:11

And I agree, the relationships in it are very unhealthy but I think it's trying to tap into teenage angst ..... it's been quite a while since I was a teenager though so it's hard to relate!
