On the "books you got for Christmas" thread, there were a lot of us who got SoP.

I'm about halfway through it, and absolutely loving it, although I keep getting confused about who's who.

No spoilers, but just a simple question - are you enjoying it?

I found the first half a bit of a struggle - there's a lot of scene setting and introductions to new characters - but by the end I was really enjoying it and I'm now looking forward to the next installment.

So you should def keep reading!

It was really confusing at first, especially all the colloquial seafarers talk - it took me time and hard work keeping up with all the threads, but it was fab and engaging ...

Glad you all enjoyed it too. I had a lovely train journey to go to a meeting in Edinburgh today. The train went really slowly so I managed to read a big chunk.

Hello!

I recommended the book for my mum's book club - it has had some very mixed responses, but it is good!

Oh, I actually quite miss my train journey - I use to finish off so much reading ....

LoveTheCarbs · 15/01/2010 13:03

I loved it too! It was one of my favourite books that I read on mat leave last year.

AgentProvocateur · 18/01/2010 19:28

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!

Right, I've finished it, and I have a big unanswered question. At the very end, the last sentence in the book IIRC, Zachary looks at Deeti and recognises her "grey eyes". I think I missed the significance of this - had they met ealier? Or is it a cliffhanger for book 2?

I enjoyed the story - but ended up reading over the masses of sailor talk. Don't think I would read it again for that reason. On balance much prefer the Glass palace and return to that occasionally

AgentProvocateur · 20/01/2010 19:06

But did you "get" the ending?

OP posts:
oricella · 21/01/2010 09:16

As I can't remember it, I probably didn't...

A year of sleep deprivation might have something to do with that though

A quick google seems to indicate it's heading for a sequel (trilogy) - it's coming back to me now; will probably read the others when they come out (but praying for a glossary)

AgentProvocateur · 21/01/2010 09:55

When I got to the (very odd) end, the final page of the book gave details of a website with a glossary! It would have been far more useful to have given the details at the start of the book. [wink[
