Dystopia/post-apocalyptic fiction- any recommendations?

Being the morbid soul that I am, I do like a good end of the world type story. I could do with a few recommendations though.
I've read 1984, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake, The Road, The Stand, I Am Legend and On The Beach. (I'm sure there's more, but I can't remember)
I'm currently reading World War Z-An Oral History of the Zombie War. Any ideas of what I should read next?

The pesthouse by jim crace is interesting

Girlfriend in a Coma - Douglas Coupland, ive half way through and its great.

Try some John Wyndham - not just Day of the Triffids but The Kraken Wakes and The Chrysalids are also good.

Lord Of The Flies

Yes to Girlfriend In A Coma (and to play spot the Smiths references too).

The Pesthouse isn't a bad read either.

King's new one is okay, although nowhere near as good as The Stand - Under The Dome.

What is I Am Legend?

Teen books - Brother In The Land is v good.

There's one about a flood which is good but have forgotten what it's called. Something like Exodus maybe?

When The Wind Blows

Oh yes, I like this sort of thing too.

The Carhullan Army by Sarah Hall is quite good, very dark with a nice fem angle on the apocalypse.

There are also some excellent children's/young people's books about nuclear war and its aftermath: Z for Zachariah, The Last Children of Schewenborn (seriously disturbing), Children of the Dust, Brother in the Land.

'Mara and Dann' Doris Lessing
I'm reading this just now after seeing a thread about it on here and can't put it down

'The Book of Dave' Will Self - it's odd, but I enjoyed it.

Also, Margaret Atwood has a follow up to Oryx and Crake out now 'Year of the Flood'.

pd james' children of men is a classic...the book much is better than the film

KurriKurri · 07/01/2010 23:25

I'd recommend Kafka, esp, The Trial.

Also if you want to venture into a slightly different medium, my grown-up DS is a fan of graphic novels, which often seem to have dystopian themes, he has enjoyed V for Vendetta (Alan Moore), and Sin City.(Miller I think?)

Pogleswood · 08/01/2010 00:11

The Time of the Fourth Horseman - Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - original plot featuring the outbreak of "pestilence".
and I'd second The Carhullan Army!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll take a note of some of he titles and head down to the library.
Janeite- I've read Lord of the Flies, but at school, which (IMO) sucks all the joy out of reading, I may give it another go one day.

inveteratenamechanger-I've got a feeling I've read Z for Zachariah, the title rings a bell, and I've got a vague memory of it being quite creepy, though I don't remember any details.

KurriKurri- I started reading V for Vendetta, but moved house halfway through and I think it's still in a box somewhere. I don't know much about graphic novels, and which ones are worth reading, but I started this because I thought Watchmen was amazing.

Blindness - Jose Saramago

itsmeolord · 08/01/2010 14:30

Stephen Kings new book The Dome is a good post apocalyptic type story.

PracticalCat · 08/01/2010 15:17

I've just finished The Year of the Flood and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the way it links up to Oryx and Crake - it's a parallel story.
