The Senator's Wife v American Wife

I've to get a lucky dip secret Santa for my book group this week. I've heard that either The Senator's Wife or American Wife is good, and the other is shite, and I can't remember which is which.

Amazon ratings have them both as 4-ish star.

Which one would you recommend?

OH MY GOd the senators wife is the oddest most UNSATISFYING book i read last summer

(apart from the second hislop one)
very odd and not a patch on AW

I am reading American Wife and it's pretty good. I am fairly picky, I'd say.

OK, American Wife it is. Thanks.

For the record, the second Hislop book was the worst book I've ever read. I started a thread to that effect back in the summer. (It was so bad, I've even erased its name from my memory!)

I found them both a bit disappointing. On balance, An American Wife, but the last third is poor.
