Do they need to be read in order? Which would you recommend as a first read?

Yes, so The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be first.

Definitely read in order - they were designed as a trilogy and there is clear story progression through the books. I think a lot of sense would be lost in reading randomly. They are fab!
