If you want a ghost story, you could try the Woman in Black by Susan Hill. Quite scary though, but is Christmas themed.

How about The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder? Or if you want a good cry then by the same author Through A Glass Darkly.

Christmas Mystery has advent days for chapters so you follow the story unfolding through each one, it is a fairly easy read but the story is very gripping and unusual.

Through A Glass Darkly (which always make me cry, but in a good way!) is about a young girl, ill in bed while her family prepare for Christmas around her, and her conversations with an angel. I'm not a religious person in any way so don't worry about it being preachy in any way and the ending is just so uplifting despite the tragedy.

My group is reading
John Grisham's Skipping Christmas this year.
Anne Perry brings out a Christmas title each year eg A Christmas Promise, A Christmas Secret.

We read Anee Perry's A Christmas Visitor

Henry Rathbone arrives to spend Christmas at the Dreghorn family manor house near Ullswater. He is greeted by the news that the master of the house, Judah Dreghorn has slipped while crossing a stream in the grounds of the estate in the middle of the night, and drowned. Not only this, but Ashton Gower, recently released from prison, is slandering Judah?s name, claiming that his family rightfully owns the estate and that the forged deeds for which he was imprisoned were in fact genuine. To Rathbone and the two remaining Dreghorn brothers, also returning to the Lakes for Christmas, Judah?s mysterious death and Gower?s outrageous claims seem inextricably linked.

Not a bad read.

thanks everyone, I think we are going with The Woman in Black, but I'll keep the thread for the next few years - it will keep us going.

Late to this but our book group just did A Child's Christmas in Wales - Dylan Thomas - though isn't not technically a book......

I like The Gift by Ceclia Ahern (I think) but appreciate it's rather trashy. I did not like the Christmas Mystery. Like the Grisham Christmas one a lot too.

Did someone already say the David Sedaris one that has the Santaland Diaries?
Well, they should have.
