Hello,

It's written by an American, I bought it in Waterstone's earlier this year. It's set in Sitka, Alaska, and is based on the premise that Sitka gave refuge to Jewish settlers after the Second World War but the settlement period is about to come to an end, with much mistrust and uncertainty between Americans and the settled Jews. The narrator/main character is a police officer, his new boss is his ex-wife, and he is investigating a plot by ultra-religious Jews to regain control of Palestine ...

It is an utterly brilliant novel and I am desperate to know the title/author so I can read some more of his stuff!! Any help gratefully appreciated, and I recommend the book if you are interested in police/crime novels - it's gripping and touching in equal measure.

I can't remember the names of any of the characters which is driving me mad - I just remember loving the book when I read it, then moved on to something else and gave the book to the charity shop rather prematurely

Thank you in advance!

The Yiddish Policemen's Union by American author Michael Chabon?

(Haven't read it, googled for it, but sounds like it could be it - am going to look out for it myself, sounds interesting)
