I really like Anne Tyler's books and have read all of them now - I was wondering if there are any similar authors I might enjoy?

how about Anne Pratchett, she is very good

or Carol Shields, I think her style is similar

Someone on here recommended Anita Shreve for Anne Tyler fans.

I've only read Patchwork Planet which I thought was ace, and I've read quite a few of Anita Shreves books - from that I think Tyler is probably a 'better' writer character wise whereas Shreve is more plot - driven. Well worth a try - Pilots Wife was good, Body suring and Light on Snow.

or Helen Dunmore ? try The Seige

Definitely Helen Dunmore if you like Anne Tyler. And maybe Lorrie Moore, too.

Mary Lawson

Barbara Kingsolver?

She's not exactly the same kind of writer but I love both Anne Tyler & her so worth a look - try The Bean Trees & Pigs in Heaven (same characters) & see what you think.

try the literature map
tis great fun if a little inaccurate at times

Ponders · 21/12/2009 23:43

oooh - and from ggirl's lit map - Pat Conroy

I haven't read all his by any means but have enjoyed the ones I have read - The Water is Wide (autobiographical), the Great Santini & the Lords of Discipline

Ponders · 21/12/2009 23:46

(I suspect the link to him is more geographical than stylistic though)

Beasknees · 02/01/2010 20:31

i was going to suggest Margaret Atwood abd see it's on the map too

or carson mccullers

claudialyman · 03/01/2010 23:57

sue miller, ann packer, anna quidlen, elizabeth berg. I think ann tyler is better than all of them but i put these next to her on my thematically arranged fiction shelves..
