Ghost stories

I'm currently enjoying M.R James' complete ghost story collection, and read Poe before that.
I'd appreciate any recommendations for something similar to those, either a novel or a compilation of short stories.

Thankyou in advance.

I have just read The Hundred Secret Senses. It's not a ghost story as such, but has a lot of ghosts in it. Haven't read Poe or M. R. James, so no idea how it compares, but I really enjoyed it. It's by Amy Tan.

You might enjoy Henry James-The Turn of The Screw.

Or this Dickens, there's also a link to Edith Wharton on that page which might appeal. HTH

The Red Room by HG Wells.

The Signalman by Charles Dickens.

Not a ghost story but good, spooky atmosphere for hot choc and a curl up by the fire - The Moonstone.

Lots of people like Ghost Story by Peter Straub - but I didn't.

How about The Mist in the Mirror by Susan Hill?

Or H P Lovecraft for shorter stories

I love M R James too - have you seen the film of Whistle and I'll come to you? So creepy and atmospheric.

Thankyou all for the suggestions so far. I'm sure I'll enjoy them.

I haven't seen the film, but I will view it later as I've found that I can watch it, Number 13,A View From A Hill, A Warning To The Curious and Lost Hearts on YT.

Oh yes to Susan Hill. The Woman In White and the one about getting lost in a painting too. And 'A Christmas Carol' of course.

We had to compare the women in black and the signal man at school, both very scary, and i recently saw the women in black at the theatre and thought i was going to poo my pants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not quite ghost stories, more weird twisty short stories but i will suggest them anyway- Roal Dahls adult short stories are weird and very clever.

JaneiteMightBite · 29/11/2009 21:46

I meant The Woman In Black - not white!

I found Lovecraft very, very hard-going.

sarz · 29/11/2009 21:53

I think the women in white is a Catherine Cookson about a girl who ends up in a mental institution!! I assumed you meant women in Black!!!

JaneiteMightBite · 29/11/2009 21:57

The Woman In White is Wilkie Collins.

The Collected Ghost Stories of EF Benson should appeal.
