has anyoen read this? they loved it on " a good read" today

I found it interesting as my DS is deaf and some of the situations he got into I can see happening but to be honest the 'story' was a bit predictable.

It did give interesting insights into what (I imagine) it is like to be deaf, and I found that aspect really thought-provoking.

As a novel, more than a little predictable. Certainly not one of his best, imho.

I read Deaf Sentence early this year, and I mentioned it to my mum whose husband is going deaf. I think they both liked it a lot, I think it's well done but found some of his earlier novels more enjoyable.

The other novel may be wonderful, but I thought the reaction to it on the programme seemed a bit strange - I only caught parts of the discussion but it seemed to be extolled as the first novel about growing up in an immigrant family in Britain - that's hardly the case!

Oh, I liked it very much. My MIL, with an increasingly deaf DH, wept throught (she's not a weeper) and said that it gave her an extraordinary insight into what it's like to get steadily deafer in adulthood, all the humiliation etc. that it involves
Yes, the plot is perhaps not that surprising, but I think it's a fantastic book. Very human.

Is interesting to read all his fiction in order, actually; you can see him going through all the stages of life himself. I specially like The British Museum is Falling Down (young father with too many children, fearful another is on the way, no money, chaos etc.)
