The Corrections - talk to me

I'm about half way though Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections. And my GOD it's driving me f*cking insane. Is it just me or are all the characters awful? Really horrid, self-involved whining people. I've just read the marital rape and want to throw the book on the fire. But we're doing it for book group and so I need to finish it.

Please has anyone read it? I know it got lots of drooling reviews so does it get better? What am I missing??

I started it but didn't get any further than a couple of chapters. Several years on, it's still on my bookshelf waiting to be finished. Lord knows if that'll ever happen! I couldn't see what all the fuss was about TBH.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 30/10/2009 22:00

Oh thank god, it's not just me, dunno if I'm just a thicko or if it's a pile of overwritten self indulgent people-hating shite.

life is too short

Has anyone read and liked it?

Nooo, it's hard to get into and then the middle bit dips but get through it and it is very rewarding. That sounds crazy but I ended up loving it! I only finished it because I always finish books I start but it really is worth it imo.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 30/10/2009 22:38

Interesting monkeysmama, did you find the characters hard to take? Or are they 'growers'? What about the humour did you find it funny?

I feel like I'm missing out on something intrinsic.

I'll keep going tho

The voice of dissent - I loved it! I read it ages ago and can't remember much, but I've just managed to persuade DH to start it.

I thought it was a great story and that the people were really well portrayed. I'm prepared to be in a minority (I hated Time Travellers Wife, so I'm used to it )

I loved this book

It's partly because the characters are hard to like that it's so brilliant.

Stick with it.

Agree with Mazzy- stick with it.
