19th Wife or An American Wife - which one should I take on holiday?

CHOOGIRL · 20/10/2009 20:38

I'm going through my holiday reading and found 19th Wife on my bookshelf - I don't even remember buying it let alone why. I've also got a copy of American Wife. Which one should I take with me?

Both fab, I think I prefer American Wife though. can't you fit them both in your suitcase or do you think you'll only get round to reading one?

DarrellRivers · 20/10/2009 20:40

Thought you were a bigamist to start with
However, am just about to start American Wife myself so that would be my vote

haventsleptforayear · 20/10/2009 20:41

Take both (how long are you going for?)

Disclaimer : have only read American Wife but I loved it.

[or maybe you should just Am wife and send the 19th wife to me - I'm all out of books

Have a nice time.

RainRainGoAway · 20/10/2009 20:41

I loved 19th Wife, not read american wife.

Our book club did 19th wife and we all loved it.

squeaver · 20/10/2009 20:41

Both v good, but American Wife better imo.

Tillyscoutsmum · 20/10/2009 20:42

I've not read the American Wife but recently read 19th Wife. I found it really interesting subject matter but found the way it was written (flitting between past and present etc) a bit annoying.

Still worth reading though imho

VictoriousSponge · 20/10/2009 20:44

BOTH the best books all year

apart from finest kind of engliush womanhood

CHOOGIRL · 20/10/2009 20:46

I'm going for a week and will have lots of time to read. Currently have Great Gatsby, Picture of Dorian Gray, Michael Mansfield's biography (huge hardback), as well as the wife books. Am trying to edit but if they are both worth reading may have to ditch one of the others.

Anyone want to sell their 19th wife to me ?

Tillyscoutsmum · 21/10/2009 12:29

You're welcome to mine haventslept. Do you want to CAT me and I can get it to you

troutpout · 21/10/2009 12:39

i read both of these for my book club
Wasn't keen on The American wife at all...but quite liked The 19th wife. I enjoyed the historical story mostly...and was actually facinated by the history of The Firsts.
My vote is for the 19th wife

morningpaper · 21/10/2009 12:40

19th wife, American Wife less entertaining

MrsJohnDeere · 21/10/2009 12:53

Loved American Wife.

LaSorciereFolle · 22/10/2009 10:05

American Wife.

American Wife.

American Wife.

Can you tell I liked it?

But how long are your hols? Why not take both?

LaSorciereFolle · 22/10/2009 10:08

oops just read your last post properly, then def take A W

I'm very envious if you are reading Dorian Gray for the first time. Brilliant book, one of my fave re-reads.

ViktoriaMac · 22/10/2009 12:51

American Wife

haventsleptforayear · 22/10/2009 12:53

Thank you for the offer TillyScoutsMum - I would rather pay someone for it than get it off Amazon.

Do you have paypal? (because I live in France so I would want to cover your postage and a bit more).

If it's too much hassle just say no.

Will sort out CAT later.

hercules1 · 22/10/2009 13:01

I've read both and much prefered American Wife.

Tillyscoutsmum · 22/10/2009 15:24

Yes - I have got paypal and its no hassle

If you don't have CAT and want to put your email address up briefly, I'm happy to email you instead

joanneg20 · 23/10/2009 20:01

American Wife is about 500 times better than 19th Wife.

moulesfrites · 26/10/2009 19:36

Read both and 19th wife was interesting but American Wife was much more of an absorbing read - the kind you can really enjoy on holiday

snickersnack · 26/10/2009 19:41

American Wife much better - more interesting and more of a proper holiday read. Kept me going on holiday this year for several days. 19th Wife quite disappointing I thought

CHOOGIRL · 02/11/2009 20:05

Thanks all. Read American Wife and loved it. Didn't want it to end. Just started 19th Wife which looks promising.
