Audiobooks - recommendations - mine and yours!

Hi, due to driving a lot I listen to audiobooks and the odd play sometimes, and I love it. I will listen to just about anything but like to listen to things that I wouldn't necessarily read.

Most recently I loved:
Anna Karenina
The Moonstone (although I've read it about a hundred times - I won't be listening to The Woman In White though)
John Grisham - The Last Juror - excellent and I wouldn't really read his books.
The Woman In Black - Susan Hill (scared the crap out of me, even though I've seen the play)

Not so good
John Grisham - The Appeal
Guillermo del Toro - The Strain (er, really not sure why, don't read it and don't listen to it, unless you are really into vampires)

I have struggled with historical audiobooks such as biographies.

Anyone else have any suggestions for me?

I listened to all the Harry Potter books via audiobook after i'd read them and I can recommend them and also anything that Stephen Fry narrates as he is lovely to listen to.

There's a great American author, Lilian Jackson Braun, who writes a series of books called "The Cat Who...". They're mostly murder mysteries, based around a reporter living in New England with his Siamese cats. They're very "easy listening", and you can more or less pick one at random as they are all self-contained and you don't need to read them in order.

I also love the Harry Potter audiobooks. Stephen Fry is fab. I've just got Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell from Audible.com, but am so far finding it slow going.

All of the Alan Bennet stuff, not strictly novels but brilliant. I enjoyed the Phillip Pullman series too and The Chrysalids by John Wyndham.

I'm tempted to get the Daphne Du Maurier series but since PFB arrived I'm not doing long car journeys which is when I listen to audio books.

Don't touch The Thorn Birds - most annoying accents EVER!

oh yes 'The Cat Who' are lovely books

I love audio books when driving, ironing etc The narrator is really important though as some voices just grate on you. Titles I have enjoyed recently and would recommend are The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseni read by him too, The Cutting Room by Louise Welsh read by Robert Carlisle, The Shipping News by Annie E Proux can't recall the narrator but was fab. Loreli King is quite good too but it's often modern american stuff which is not always to my taste.

I like the idea of The Shipping News, read the book a long time ago and loved it.

Oh and Philp Pullman, although I have read the books (twice)! It has been a while and it would a good way to revisit them.
