Check out his work on the long-running radio show "This American Life". Excellent.

InmyheadIminParis · 08/05/2009 16:52

I bought 'dress your family in corduroy' (or something) after hearing a review on Radio 4 that said it was the funniest thing they'd ever read about families. I think I failed to see the joke. It was a nice, light, fun read - but nothing to write home about IFSWIM

Ooo I love him
Am reading 'Naked' right now and it's hilarious. His accounts of his family really are brilliant. His sister Amy is funny too

YanknCock · 08/05/2009 16:56

I have a copy of 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' and have heard him read some of the stories from there on This American Life. He's brilliant.

thanks - will probably buy that new one with the skeleton on the cover !

all his stuff is very funny. He is a slightly more acerbic and bitchy Woody Allen. Like him very much. The one with the skeleton on the cover has some excellent bits in it. He does make me laugh embarassingly in public places.

browntrout · 08/05/2009 18:38

in the skeleton one there is a story about his parents leaving their children with a mad babysitter for a week (!) and another about a foul mouthed old woman tenant in the same NY apartment block as DS and his partner - both of them are hilarious.

I like him, can you tell?

MargaretMountford · 08/05/2009 21:02

browntrot - you've sold it to me !

excellent - maybe I'll get my commission from him now!

The Santaland Diaries is something a friend of mine used to give to everyone at Christmas, me included. I must say his account of working in Macy's as a Christmas Elf sticks in my sieve-like mind as one of the funniest things I have ever read. And I'm quite hard to please!

RaggedRobin · 09/05/2009 21:48

Loved "me talk pretty" and "santaland diaries"; both laugh out loud funny.

MargaretMountford · 10/05/2009 14:33

Naked is fantastically funny. Bliss.

Babbity · 26/05/2009 22:20

He's the funniest writer. The Santaland Diaries are pure genius.

"The woman in charge of costuming assigned us our outfits and gave us a lecture on keeping things clean. She held up a calendar and said, "Ladies, you know what this is. Use it. I have scraped enough blood out from the crotches of elf knickers to last me the rest of my life. And don't tell me, `I don't wear underpants, I'm a dancer.' You're not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf."

8oreighty · 27/05/2009 18:35

You will laugh out loud...so funny. Try and read them in order - is all I would say, as they all sort of add up...

squeaver · 27/05/2009 18:37

Oh he's fab. One of my favourite writers.

iwanttolearn · 28/05/2009 14:55

He's very, very funny. I loved Me Talk Pretty One Day, especially when he was talking about his stay in France.
