and what was the last book you read? And what will be next?

Just interested and always looking for inspiration though I have a huge "to read" pile already!

Am currently reading "Revolutionary Road"
Last read "Portobello" by Ruth Rendell
Next will probably be...oh I don't know, will immerse myself in book mountain and see what I fancy.

I recently read and enjoyed:

Singled Out
Call the Midwife
Girls of Riyadh

Just read "The Almost Moon" by Alice Sebold about a woman who kills her mother. Loved it but some parts at the beginning made me cringe but I like being taken out of my comfort zone sometimes.

Currently reading "The Suspicions of Mr Whicher" by Kate Summerscale. Finding it pretty hard going tbh (though that could be down to just finding out I'm pg with DC#2 and can't concentrate on anything). On the strength of Latchley's and SouthernMeerkats recommendations, will persevere.

Thanks Tangerine, you've just brought back fantastic memories of when my favourite teacher read "The Castle of Adventure" to us in primary school and we did a big term project about it... those were the days!

Don't know which book I'll read next. I've started turning the books I haven't read round the wrong way on the shelf, so I can't see what it is before I pick it up. Used to find that even though a book sounded interesting at the time of buying it, I would still go for a certain genre instead. This way, I'm reading more books kindly recommended by friends and the fab booksellers at Waterstones that I wouldn't ordinarily go for and really enjoying them.

Yes, yes, yes, about "A Fine Balance". I only read it last year and thought it was excellent, though certainly full of sorrow. Read "Family Matters" too last year and thought very good, though not quite as engulfing (in the sense of taking over my imagination utterly).

I've also just read Tove Jansson's " Summer Book", a collection of Edith Wharton's short stories and a collection of Kate Chopin's short stories.

This thread is brilliant for ideas!

Re-reading The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson. Not sure what I'll read next yet.

This year I've been writing down all the books I've been reading and how long they've taken - am quite impressed I've kept it up for over two months.

Just finished
It by Stephen King.

Starting today

What was lost
Catherine O'Flynn.

I have rediscovered my Jilly Coopers and am loving Rivals again

(I have been unwell though this week and not felt like a deep read!!)

FlossieT · 07/03/2009 14:24

Most recently finished Vicky Had One Eye Open - Darryl Samaraweera.

Reading non-fiction at the moment: What Should I Do With My Life? - Po Bronson. V interesting so far.

Winter in Kabul - Ann Jones lined up next as that has to go back to the library next week.

Then it'll be a toss-up between MN March bookswap book and The Silver Lining Playbook - Matthew Quick. More tempted by the latter tbh - bookswap book is one that I have avoided to date as it doesn't look like my kind of thing (although being exposed to new stuff is kind of the point of the swap).

Things My Mother Never Told Me by Blake Morrison; I think he writes extraordinary memoirs and observational tracts.

janeite · 07/03/2009 14:35

Just read:
A View From The Bridge - Arhur Miller: have read it loads of times but it's still fab / Danse Macabre by Stephen King (another re-read) and The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer (yet another re-read but not since I was about 12 so I'd forgotten lots of it.

Just started reading and given up on:
Shakespeare's Wife by Germaine Greer - it felt like she was determined to use every bit of research she or anybody else has ever done and it was therefore boring and hard work.

Just about to read:
The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (I don't think I've ever read this so will be disappointed if I start it and find out I have) and The Gargoyle.

kickassangel · 07/03/2009 14:41

SouthernMeerkat · 09/03/2009 13:43

Oh, I hope you do get into it Wizzy Woo!! I feel all responsible now.

I did enjoy it, but then I adore Wilkie Collins, crime fiction and historical dramas, so it was right up my street really!
