Just interested and always looking for inspiration though I have a huge "to read" pile already!

Am currently reading "Revolutionary Road"
Last read "Portobello" by Ruth Rendell
Next will probably be...oh I don't know, will immerse myself in book mountain and see what I fancy.

Tattycoram _ Have just bought American Wife Curtis Sittenfeld this morning. Let me know what you thought of it.

Now reading Catcher in the Rye JD Salinger. Enjoying it.

Last book - Spilling the Beans Clarissa Dickson Wright - really interesting about keeping a job when under the influence.

cremolafoam · 05/03/2009 12:10

just finished "Vienna" by Eva Menasse which was very entertaining
am now reading "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith, which has been sitting there since it was on the book club list in December
next book will be "Man walked into a room" by Nicole Krauss which I was given for Xmas

TwoIfBySea · 05/03/2009 12:59

I thought Vienna was an excellent book, thanks for reminding me about it cremolafoam.

Last book - Eclipse
Current book - The Road
Next book - Breaking Dawn (last part of the Twilight puzzle.)

Jenbot · 05/03/2009 15:02

I've just finished Storming Heaven: LSD and the American Dream and a book about the history of Def Jam, and Gilead, a Pulitzer winner from the 90s which was lovely.

Now I'm on The Italian Boy, about graverobbers, seems to be on similar territory to Mr Whicher so far, the beginnings of detective work n stuff.

Next, I don't know, I might order Home by the Gilead author which tells the same tale from another perspective I understand, but maybe I should wait a bit!

roseability · 05/03/2009 19:29

Currently reading Roberto Bolano's 2666

Last read Revoltuionary Road

Next read will be Katherine Kerr's Dagerspell. I read her fantasy series in my teens so it is more sentimentality then anything. I am also going into my last trimester of pregnancy and looking for 'easier' reads, as my brain is fudge!

ilovespinach · 05/03/2009 19:39

Current read: December by Elizabeth somebody
Last read: The 19th Wife

Next read: Not sure might tackle Bleak House

kikidee · 06/03/2009 00:10

Just finished - When Will There be Good News
Currently reading - The Girl who Played with Fire
Next - White Tiger for our new book group and The Queens Fool. Have lots in my pile actually, most of which I'm excited about.

Londonartemis - I read The American Wife a few months ago and just passed it on to a friend tonight. I really enjoyed it but I loved Curtis Sittenfeld's other books and i generally like American novels.

brimfull · 06/03/2009 00:13

Just about to finish The Condition by Jennifer Haigh,it's about a woman with Turners Syndrome and her families reaction to it.Very good.

singersgirl · 06/03/2009 09:13

Just read "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula Le Guin, which is sci-fi, so not normally a genre I'd choose, but found it really compelling and very much enjoyed it.

Read "When will there be good news?" a couple of weeks ago and was rather disappointed. Also read a book by Tim Pears called "A Revolution of the Sun" and found that overwritten and laborious. Re-read "Brideshead Revisited" as that was what my mum had with her on our holiday and in contrast the easy, fluent, unpretentious style of Waugh was a joy.

Also just finished the latest Ladies' Detective one and currently on the letter C in a book called "Reading the Oxford English Dictionary" or something by someone called something like Ammon Shea.

"Humboldt's Gift" by Saul Bellow is our next reading group choice.

Shandyleer · 06/03/2009 11:15

Just finished Peter Robinson's Colours of Darkness which I thought was dire. About to start The 19th Wife, and then might read Nella Last's Peace.

londonartemis · 06/03/2009 12:12

kikidee - glad you liked American Wife as I bought it by recommendation of the bumpf on the cover only!
By the way, finished Catcher in the Rye last night and was truly gripped by the last fifty pages. I do recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

CharCharGabor · 06/03/2009 12:16

Last book - Billie Morgan by Joolz Denby
Current book - Chasm by Stephen Laws
Next book - Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker

MrsMerryHenry · 06/03/2009 12:58

Scarletibis · 06/03/2009 13:07

Just finished 'The Nightwatch' by Sarah Waters. V good although I though some parts worked better than others.

Have to decide what to read next - When will there be Good News? by Kate Atkinson or Patchwork Planet by Anne Tyler...

I am re-reading The Map that Changed the world by Simon Winchester (non-fiction actually), and also reading Kavalier and Clay by someone Chabron (sic)

Next: I dunno - whatever DH brings home from his book group prolly.

bananapaddlepop · 06/03/2009 13:11

Last read - A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. It's the one that caused all the controversy with Oprah when he promoted it as a bio, when it's really more fiction.

Currently reading - What I Loved by Siri Huvstvedt.

Next read.... not sure.

RockinSockBunnies · 06/03/2009 13:21

I recently finished Obama's first book, 'Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance ' and found it awful. I was so disappointed and in fact, reading it has put me off Obama as a person somewhat. I had such high expectations and, IMO, he did nothing but whine for around 400 pages. Frankly, there's only so much soul-searching I can read about.

Am currently reading 'Lover of Unreason: The Life and Tragic Death of Assia Wevill' by Yehuda Koren. It's fascinating (I'm a big fan of biographies) since most of the focus surrounds the whole Ted Hughes/Sylvia Plath saga, so it's interesting to see the other aspect of the story.

Next in line is Nelson Mandela's autobiography.

duchesse · 06/03/2009 13:32

"The Flaneur" by Edmund White. His thoughts on Paris. So far, he seems to be admirably channeling all that cafe philosopher pretentiousness...

ihearthuckabees · 06/03/2009 13:36

The Luminous Life of Lily Aphrodite by Beatrice Colin - I know the author, and her books are all fab.

Before that: The History Man by Stephen Fry - I've read it before but not for a long time, and had forgotten a lot of the plot. It was fun.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 06/03/2009 13:40

Just finished "East of the Sun" which was such a lovely romp, fantastic. I wasn't sure I would enjoy it but can heartily recommend it.
About to start a new Simon Renwick, a good gruesome murder always cheers me up.
Also been listening to Careless in Red by Elizabeth George on my ipod.

suwoo · 06/03/2009 13:40

Just finished Atonement and currently reading Gore Vidal's Kalki which is pretty random. Next I am going to have a crack at Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White.

snickersnack · 06/03/2009 14:10

Just finished "The Gargoyle" by Andrew Davidson. It had its moments - it wasn't brilliantly written but was intriguing.

Am currently reading "The Dumas Club" by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Had no preconceptions - was given it be a friend. Am hoping it's going to be a bit like The Shadow Of The Wind, which I loved.

Some inspiring ideas here - lots of things to go and chase up.

Posey · 06/03/2009 17:49

Love this list and loads of inspiration, including lots of stuff I've not heard of which I will check out.

Does anyone else love choosing what to read next? When I'm coming to the end of a book I get quite excited by the prospect of picking the next!

I love these threads !

I have just finished Notes on an Exhibiton - Patrick Gale. Quite enjoyed it.

I have just started Notes on a Scandal - actually a re-read as I read it when it first came out but we're doing it at book club and I can't remember much about it other than the fact I didn't enjoy it much so interesting to see what I make of it this time.

Then I will read Catherine O'Flynn - what was lost for MN book club

Then probably the latest lady detective book.

Am 39 weeks pregnant though so it might be a bit ambitious to get through these particularly quickly - depends how long the baby takes to arrive !
