Its her birthday soon. I know she has enjoyed 'Shadow of the Wind' and Kate Mosse 'Labyrinth' & 'Sepulchre'. Also likes Kathy Reichs and Sally Beauman.

A practical person, not really into romance, domestic, kitchen sink drama. Or classics.

She likes completely different things from me - any ideas, please?

A couple spring to mind that may work
'The Observations' - Jane Harris. Funny, (in places), quite a page turner.
'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel' - Susanna Clarke - v.different, but would probably like it if enjoyed SotW and Labyrinth.
Does she like historical stuff or thrillers? If so, CJ Sansom is a really good bet, as he manages to combine the two...

If she likes Kathy Reichs she may like Patricia Cornwell, but I wouldn't get her the most recent one, I would get her maybe the first couple on paperback to see if she likes them.

Jeffrey Deaver also does murder/thriller types. He did the Bone Collector which was made into a film. If she liked that she may like some of his others.

What about Ken Follet. He does lots of different types, I've read a few and can't remember the names of any, just that they were good stories.
