He's bookless at the moment and getting restless - apparently none of the many unread books in the house will do. He claims to not want a novel - he wants "a ripping adventure yarn based on truth" and extra points will be given for the inclusion of food and or fishing. To give you some more clues , other books he has enjoyed are everything by Mark Kurlansky, Into the Heart of Borneo by Redmond O Hanlon and Waterlog by Richard Deakin.

Touching The Void?

pillsthrillsandbellyaches · 17/02/2009 22:31

a ripping adventure yarn which Yann Martell cleverly makes you think is based on truth.

fruitshootsandheaves · 17/02/2009 22:31

five go to Smugglers Top

duckyfuzz · 17/02/2009 22:32

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bordain is a great shout, squonk! One of the handfull of book my DP has read.

What about "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad?

JimmyMcNulty · 17/02/2009 22:44

I second Touching the Void (a true story), absolutely brilliant, terrifying. Pretty sure it's got food in it somewhere.

JimmyMcNulty · 17/02/2009 22:45

x-posted. If he liked Touching the Void there's also The Death Zone by Matt Dickinson (along similar lines)

fryalot · 17/02/2009 22:51

there's a sequel to Kitchen Confidential if he enjoyed that.

"a cooks tour" I think it's called.

fryalot · 17/02/2009 22:52

yes, it is called A Cooks Tour (don't know why I couldn't have looked for the link in my first post

treacletart · 17/02/2009 22:55

Sorry Squonk - too good a call he's read that too!

Assume he's read Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger?

has he also read The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers? (novel - but great stuff all the same).

My dh is very excitedly about to start Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household - classic thriller (sorry, another novel).

choosyfloosy · 17/02/2009 22:58

A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby (more of a giggle than a ripping adventure but non-fiction, and good).

the White Nile and The Blue Nile are great books - erm, who by? (googles) Alan Moorehead

The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry Garrard

fryalot · 17/02/2009 22:59

has he read the lonely sea and the sky?

TheYearOfTheCat · 17/02/2009 23:01

DH read 'Trawler' and thought it was OK. It ticks the 'fish' box.

choosyfloosy · 17/02/2009 23:04

Oh! Also 'The Reason Why' by Cecil Woodham Smith, about the Charge of the Light Brigade. Wonderful.

treacletart · 18/02/2009 18:06

Thanks for these! They 're obviously right up his alley because he's read most already! But I'll be sure to check the rest and any others out.

here

Lotster · 18/02/2009 18:50

Hmm, was also going to suggest Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential!

Failing that, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is hilarious.

treacletart · 18/02/2009 20:00

yup read those last 2 too, fear and loathing one of his favourites!

DH says the Flashman novels are good for ripping adventure - but they are fiction.
