Have read about 100 pgs, it is brill, pretty gruesome. However my copy has coloured pages (black -- is that a colour?) ie at the edge of each page. I presume this is a design feature to make the book stand out. Except that each page is stuck and you have to gingerly separate each page. How annoying.

This is a particularly good book imo and the black pages echoe something that came out last year (something about Mr Y? - can't remember the title). I found this an altogether more satisfying book. My pages didn't stick together but maybe that was because they were opened so quickly, they didn't get chance

I have this to read ans am looking forward to it. I also recently read, 'The end of Mr Y' and loved that.

oggsdog · 15/02/2009 12:39

I've borrowed 'The End of Mr Y' three times from the library and then returned it without reading it (have never been in the right mood for it).

I'll make sure I actually read it this time

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 15/02/2009 12:53

End of Mr Y very overrated imo, the book design was very seductive though

have just bought The Gargoyle, so look forward to reading it

Lurker, I liked the Gargoyle better than the Mr Y book. I thought the ending was a bit weak on Mr Y and it rambled a bit in places. I'm no intellectual, so couldn't dissect it but it was a little unsatisfying after a really promising start.

This, however, was different...very different. I thought it was disturbing at the start and wondered whether I'd stick with it. Then I got engrossed and toward the end I was desperate to find out what happened. A very readable book.

Ooh I picked this up today and then put it down again.

I didn't think much of The End Of Mr Y. Might get this one, as I have birthday money to spend.

I am reading the Gargoyle just now and I really ,really like it! it is so unusual. I keep telling my friends about it ! I am about 3/4 of the way through and don't really want it to end...anyone else read it or reading it just now?

bodiddly · 29/03/2009 19:18

I've just taken this out of the library - glad to hear it is good. I will read it next in that case!

FfreckleFface · 29/03/2009 19:24

I have just started it, and am enjoying it so far. I think the gruesomeness is great - it's been a while since I have read anything that has made me wince like that.

Will return to the thread to return as I progress.

HumphreyCobbler · 29/03/2009 19:49

I loved it.
Page sticking bloody annoying though.
Liked Mr Y too

donnie · 29/03/2009 19:57

I especially like the stories marianne tells from past ages, like the one about the Japanese glass blower and also the Viking man who sacrificed himself - they are so captivating.

janeite · 01/04/2009 16:48

I really liked it. The pages were irritating though.

roulade · 09/04/2009 12:58

I loved it, i enjoyed Mr Y too though it was a bit heavy going on the sciency stuff

I have just finnished Gargoyle and felt out of sorts all day - I often get like this with a good book, it's like saying goodbye to a good freind. Also kind of enjoyed Mr Y but felt the ending was a bit of a cop out. I'm now reading Pop-Co - I have a thing for coloured edging.
