I love reading but new to the library (been abroad for 7 years where librarys don't exist). I usually read chick lit as I get bored looking at the huge amount of books and usually choose my books by the cover . However on a friends recommendation I read The Kite Runner and have just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns which I Loved !!
So can anyone recommend any good books that aren'r chick lit ?
Thanks

If you're liking Afghanistan books, I will fall over myself to recommend The Wasted Vigil - Nadeem Aslam. A bit gruesome, but just beautifully written. I'm getting boring recommending this to everyone and I don't care - it's brilliant and was criminally overlooked last year.

Of course, you may feel that while chicklit is out of the question, you're after a slightly lighter read after all the Hosseini...

no suggestions with books, but no about choosing them based on the cover - people put a lot of time and effort making the cover perfect so people can choose for that reason!

the bookseller of kabul? puts the other books in context - I read it straight after 1000 splendid suns

Have you read Anita Shreve - I don't think its chicklit, but she is not a difficult read and can be very thought provoking. My favourites are 'Strange Fits of Passion' and 'Fortune's Rocks'.

Thanks ladies. Just been to the library but forgot to take the list with your suggestions so just went for another nice front paged chick lit book !
I think I've read an Anita Shreve book, can't remember name though.
