I just finished it and loved it too, the variety of narratives really keeps you interested, and it was fascinating to learn about a such a different way of life!

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 26/01/2009 18:23

am looking forward to reading this now - once I've ploughed my way through 'The Northern Clemency'

Wolfcub · 26/01/2009 20:37

started this last night, so far so good

KarlWrenbury · 27/01/2009 13:50

Now I have finished it.
I think the book was better than the ending

Apollinare · 04/02/2009 19:26

Have just finished it and thought it was great. I dont usually like plots that switch between two time periods, I just get into one story and we have to leave it, but this was OK, especially near the end. I like the way there is not the usual obvious connection between the two stories (granny, for instance)- just consequences.

grendel · 05/02/2009 12:29

I really enjoyed the book and finished last night - but I'm a bit confused about the conclusion of the modern day narrative - was I just not paying attention? Can anyone help me out?

DON'T READ ON IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BOOK YET

  • Why was Queenie pretending to be pregnant?
  • Had Alton really taken a second wife? And if not, why did Queenie keep pretending to Jordan that there was a second wife in the house?
  • What happened to Sister Rita?
  • Why did Girl 5 lie to Jordan about when she left Mesadale?
Apollinare · 05/02/2009 19:59

I am a bit confused as well - but will have a guess at...

Queenie & Alton were throwing Jordan off the scent as he was investigating. If he found out that SHE had just become no.19 then all would be revealed!!!
Dont know what happened to Sister Rita.
Girl 5 lied because she had a good motive and opportunity to be the killer and didnt leave until the commotion started.
Happy to stand corrected.
