I think I'm about up to date with everyone's books that I know I like.

Need to take a trip to the library next week, who should I be looking for?

karin slaughter?

TheThoughtPolice · 24/01/2009 22:11

Mo Hayder ?

TheThoughtPolice · 24/01/2009 22:11

Hayder is genius but VERY graphic serial killer stuff

grumpalina · 24/01/2009 22:15

Kathryn Fox I fantastic although so far she's only written three I think.

I presume you've read ValMcDiarmid.

Nicci French for something abit unusual.

laidbackinengland · 24/01/2009 22:16

Peter James (not a woman obviously...)?

pushchair · 24/01/2009 22:17

Donna Leon.
Italian detective. Lots of nice food, a happily married detective who isn't an alcoholic, interesting stories. Fab.

blueshoes · 24/01/2009 22:18

I cannot read Mo Hayder anymore now that I have dcs. But I managed to get through Birdman and The Treatment prior. She is unparalleled.

cocolepew · 24/01/2009 22:18

Janet Evanovich - very funny P.I novels

Sue Grafton - female P.I. books

bran · 24/01/2009 22:18

Sparkle Hayter - very lightweight, funny, private eye stuff

I can only think of the very obvious female crime writers, and I assume you've read the main male writers too (Michael Connelly etc). Have you tried Henning Mankell?

WeeTimorousSquonkie · 24/01/2009 22:19

Read all Karin Slaughter's (even the last one... not sure about the ending, can't wait for the next one...) and didn't really like Pig Island by Mo Hayder, and I've heard that that was the least graphic of the lot, so not sure I really want to try her.

Yes, I'm fairly Val McDermid-ed up but not tried the others mentioned so far.

Am doing a list so I know what to look for, keep 'em coming...

blueshoes - isn't it odd when you read the little biog and look at her photograph. Hard to imagine a petite Cath Kidston bunting mummy writing such stuff ?!

TheThoughtPolice · 24/01/2009 22:20

Birdman and The Treatment are the best ones

Feenie · 24/01/2009 22:21

Sophie Hannah is brilliant.

blueshoes · 24/01/2009 22:21

After a glut of gruesome crime novels, I now like Harlen Coben and Mark Billingham. Less of the gruesome sex-motivated serial murders.

TheThoughtPolice · 24/01/2009 22:22

DH loves Mark Billingham but didn't rate his most recent one. Harlan Coben does my head in.

WeeTimorousSquonkie · 24/01/2009 22:22

yeah, I like Harlen Coben, nice and easy! And Mark Billingham, I've read a couple of his (although I can't remember which ones off the top of my head...)

OP posts:
pushchair · 24/01/2009 22:23

Or vintage stuff like
Ngaio Marsh
Margery Allingham
Dorothy L Sayers

blueshoes · 24/01/2009 22:23

TTP, Mo must have turned to the darkside ...

cocolepew · 24/01/2009 22:23

Michael Connelly

Nelson De Mille

Lee Childs

fishiedewar · 24/01/2009 22:24

laura lippman is very good.
sue grafton if you haven't come across is an alphabet series so start as early as you can. currently on t i think. set in 80s.

TheThoughtPolice · 24/01/2009 22:25

Billinghams latest one was v disappointing according to DH

wrongsideof40 · 24/01/2009 22:25

hi - can't hink of any women you've missed - so how about some men - there's the Swedish chap whose name I forget - recently serialised on BBC with Kenneth Branagh - or have you read 'The Interpretation of Murder ' by Jez Rubenfeld or Restless by William Boyd is edge of the seat stuff

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/01/2009 22:26

Well as you're a fan of Val and Karin and I am too, you should certainly like Jeffery Deaver - have you read him?

Also like the Sue Grafton alphabet series already mentioned (though you have to cast your memory back to times pre mobile phones for her stories), and Kathy Reichs (some of hers are better than others IMO).

WeeTimorousSquonkie · 24/01/2009 22:26

I have a full set of Michael Connelly, and I've read some Lee Childs (I've exhausted the library's stock at least...)

The others mentioned I don't think I've tried.

These are good, thanks guys
