I like crime fiction. I like female crime writers (but not exclusively) Who have I missed?

I think I'm about up to date with everyone's books that I know I like.

Need to take a trip to the library next week, who should I be looking for?

OP posts:

I love this genre so think I will add to the list!!

Vena Cork - Thorn, Art of Dying, Green Eye (need to read in order!)

Laura Wilson - Don't know why she is not more widely read

Laura Lippman Although the Tess Monaghan books are good the books outside that series are even better, What the Dead Know, Every Secret Thing, The Power of Three

Tana French - In The Woods, and The Likeness.
Wonderful

Gillian Flynn - Sharp Objects was an amazing debut, she has another book out this year

Gillian White - Superb writer, Copycat and The Witches Cradle are favourites of mine

Carol Goodman - Gripping stories, ful of myth and legend, unputdownable.

Sophie Hannah - Love her work

Sarah Rayne - Real page turners, some of hers have a touch of the supernatural about them

Catriona Mcpherson - Great 'by accident' detective and great humour in these books

Obviously anything by Ruth Rendell, Barbara Vine or Val Mcdermid

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles writes the Bill Slider detective novels, and I like her stuff. She also writes the historical fiction The Morland Dynasty, which starts in the middle ages. Talented woman.

Donna Leon
Denise Mina
Jess Walter

Great thread. Lots of writers I haven't heard of and am looking forward to trying.

MsG · 27/01/2009 08:47

Apart from lots of the ones mentioned, I also like Jilliane Hoffman, although found her latest not as exciting as the previous ones. Natsuo Kirino is gripping but VERY gruesome. I read a good crime book set in Florence but can't remember the title or author! It's got an orange cover, if that helps...

I enjoyed a Greg Iles book too - I think it was called 24 Hours - quite a page-turner...

YesSirICanBoogie · 27/01/2009 15:18

Some writers I enjoy are Lee Child, Michael Connolly, Karen Campbell, Linda Fairstein. Sue Grafton novels really irritate me but they're a very fast read. Jeffrey Deaver and Jeff Lindsay are great. Sorry, mostly men!

kaxter · 27/01/2009 15:28

What about RJ Ellory - he wrote A Quiet Beliefg in Angels which was great. Am reading A simple Act of Violence now by the same author and it had me at hello as they say.

apsie · 27/01/2009 18:27

I'd add Carol O'Connell, and if you like Nicci French try Nicci Gerrard, which is her solo work, not so much crime, but really good. Elizabet George? But she is an acquired taste .

TotalChaos · 27/01/2009 18:28

MsG - do you mean Michele Giuttari - A Florentine Death and Death in Tuscany?

TotalChaos · 27/01/2009 18:32

Stella Duffy. Lightweight but fun.

PD James.

Peter Temple- Good aussie author.

Gary Disher - Another good aussie author.

Diamond Dove by Adrian Hyland. Very good and unusual -set in Aboriginal community.

Ken Bruen - dark but very well written Irish PI novels.

PandaG · 27/01/2009 18:37

so agree about Cornwell, loved the first few, rest have gone right off the boil.

I liked Case Histories - Kate Atkinson, have just picked One Good Turn up from a charity shop.

what about Minette Walters?

second BArbara Vine

think the Jonathon Kellerman has gone off the boil a bit recently too

MouseMate · 27/01/2009 18:40

J D Robb - the 'in death' series - great crime scenes with a fantasy element (set in the future - some good sex scenes too )

Also John Connelly for very dark crime.

Grafton just seems to old fashioned now, and Cornwell is just bloody annoying

mosschops30 · 27/01/2009 18:54

What about Martina Cole, I love hers, although some make difficult reading

boogiewoogie · 27/01/2009 22:21

Another vote for Kate Atkinson

lyra41 · 28/01/2009 14:16

Cath Staincliffe is great.

mackerel · 28/01/2009 14:18

Donna Leon- Italian, great detective novels, good central character set in Venice and his lunches are awesome!! henning Mankell good too.

MsG · 28/01/2009 18:04

TotalChaos, yes, I do mean Michele Giuttari! Thanks for that - it was winding me up and I can't check as it's in a box in the loft. I enjoyed A Florentine Death. I read it shortly after I'd been to Florence so that was great. Haven't read Death In Tuscany yet - have you?

I'm going to read a Donna Leon soon as I've heard great things about her.

FuriousGeorge · 31/01/2009 18:39

James Lee Burke
Alafair Burke
Sara Paretsky
George Pelicanos

WorkInProgress · 31/01/2009 18:50

Kate Ellis is very good. Modern Crime with a historical twist.

Earthymama · 19/02/2009 23:19

I really like Jonathan Kellerman American

and Andrew Taylor Atmospheric, though those two aren't women obviously!

Also Anne Perry Victorian.

Zorayda · 06/03/2009 20:37

WeeTimorousSquonkie sorry for not answering. Took a bit of an MN break. PJ Tracy are a mother/daughter writing couple, but they've not done anything recently. Am quite anxious for the next one, as really enjoy their work.

neversaydie · 06/03/2009 22:02

Josephine Tey was writing about the same time as Dorothy Sayers. Daughter of Time combines detection and history and was the first inkling I ever had that history might actually be interesting...

Quentin Jardine is good on Edinburgh

simpson · 07/03/2009 21:36

Absolutely brilliant thread!!

Have got loads of authors to try out

I like Jesse Kellerman

son of Fay & Jonathan.

scotslass69 · 17/03/2009 18:09

Hi, try Karen Slaughter and Tami Hoag they have some great books Tami Hoag always gets a bit sexy for added oomph!

MargotBeauregarde · 17/03/2009 18:13

What's tami hoag like. always wondered. is she even a crime writer?

scotslass69 · 17/03/2009 18:17

I've read all her books and mostly they are individual stories but there are 2 dust to dust and ashes to ashes and they are great. The heroine always meets someone and theres always a bit of hanky panky but the crime stories are great. Most are set in the deep south o montana. Honestly they are really good reads.
