I like crime fiction. I like female crime writers (but not exclusively) Who have I missed?

I think I'm about up to date with everyone's books that I know I like.

Need to take a trip to the library next week, who should I be looking for?

sqonk I couldn't be arsed changing it [lazy emoticon}

I wish you'd started this thread last week as I've only just given all my brookmyre ones to my friend

bringbackpacers · 24/01/2009 23:11

Not Scottish but similar age as CB, lived in Scotland for a few years (uni), can relate to the the music refs and so on. Though I've also got a friend who loves his books too despite never having set foot in Scotland as far as I know and being much younger.

I'll be making my own library list from this thread I think!

weetimerousdizzybeastie · 24/01/2009 23:14

just Dh being lazy then I'm 32 and grew up not far from Paisley but have lived all over Scotland so can pretty much relate to all the locations - I think they're brilliant

Zorayda · 24/01/2009 23:14

In addition to a number of those already mentioned, I like:

PJ Tracy
Karen Rose and
Beverly Barton.

WeeTimorousSquonkie · 24/01/2009 23:15

PJ Tracy I have read (is that the one who is actually a mother and daughter writing together?)

don't know the others though.

Dizzy - I wish I'd started it last week now as well

Kate Atkinson's crime(ish) books? Not the hard-boiled style though so maybe not your thing...

Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects was seriously impressive. Not a series though.

Second Sophie Hannah. Preposterous plots, slightly wooden characters, TOTALLY gripping.

hazeyjane · 24/01/2009 23:21

Laura Lippman is great.

WeeTimorousSquonkie · 24/01/2009 23:21

I lost a Kate Atkinson book on the train from Manchester so I daren't ask the library for any more

Do you ever buy books WTS? You could join Read It Swap It if you have books that you don't want to read again.

march29 · 25/01/2009 12:24

try nora roberts also writes as j d robb. she is brilliant!!

SilentTerror · 25/01/2009 12:50

I love crime fiction, especially British crime fiction, and have just got into period crime.
I would recommend the following female authors
Laura Wilson
Barbara Nadel(especially London in the blitz series)
Barbara Vine
Kate Atkinson
Catriona Macpherson

Male
Peter James
F G Cottram
Peter Robinson
Jim Kelly
Andrew Taylor

FossilSister · 25/01/2009 13:13

Second Barbara Vine - it's Ruth Rendell under a pseudonym but no annoying Inspector Wexford. very psychological - great stories.

Love the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. Already mentioned. Very light and funny, partic. Grandma Mazur!

Patricia Highsmith = the Ripley stories. Again very psychological.

SaltireOShanter · 25/01/2009 13:14

I have read All the rebus books
All the Karin Slaughter ones
Some Val McDermid
Some Harlen Coben
and I have read quite a few Patricia Cornwell books but that bloody Scarpetta woman annoys me. The killer always has a grudge or dislike of her, or her bloody neice. She annoys me in away that Amanda Burtons character did in the first few series of Silent Witness - always thinking she was in the right and never caring about rules and regs at all. -Rant over now.

I started reading a Kate Atkinson, called One Good Turn, my mum gave it to me, because it's set in Edinburgh and she know I like Rebus, but I couldn't get into it at all, so gave up.

sweetmonkey · 25/01/2009 13:19

mary higgins clark is great

hannahsaunt · 25/01/2009 13:21

I really like the Lindsey Davies ones, if you don't mind your detectives historical. (I really didn't get the fuss over Mo Hayder either - thought she was quite rubbish). What about PD James and Ruth Rendell - both without measure.

JulesJules · 25/01/2009 14:09

Some women authors -
Laura Lippman - the Tess Monaghan books, set in Baltimore
Janet Evanovich - the Stephanie Plum books set in New Jersey. Funny, fluffy crime.
Sparkle Hayter - if you like the Plum books, you will like these
Sarah Strohmeyer - the Bubbles books, super fluffy crime featuring Bubbles, a hairdresser who looks like Barbie.
Donna Leon - Venetian detective
Manda Scott - set in Scotland, her heroine Kellen Stewart is a psychiatrist.
Karen Kijewski - Kat Colorado books (not sure if these are still available)

And some men -
James Lee Burke
Henning Mankell
Tony Hillerman - Navajo policeman, set in New Mexico
Lawrence Block - especially the Burglar series
Steven Saylor - set in ancient Rome

JulesJules · 25/01/2009 14:25

Oh and I really liked Lauren Henderson's books - Dead White Female, Too Many Blondes, Strawberry tattoo, etc. featuring Sam Jones, who is a sculptor and part time sleuth. (Don't be put off by the truly awful covers)

elle23 · 25/01/2009 15:14

i love sophie hannah. crime thriller

Bucharest · 25/01/2009 15:21

I've also recently discovered Sophie Hannah who I agree is fab- bit like a good Nicci French (some of theirs have been a bit hit and miss)

Also Elizabeth Corley- she's my new fave....

Agree totally about Cornwell being bonkers and Lucy being irritating in the extreme....Cathy Reich far more believable.

ladyhelen2 · 25/01/2009 15:24

I have just discovered Natasha Cooper at my local library. Not a police based crime writer. her heroin is a female barrister. But v v good. A surpise as I'd never heard of her before but would def recommend.

Feenie · 25/01/2009 18:35

I think Sophie Hannah is getting better and better, actually - i enjoyed her last one the most. Can't wait for the next one - reminds me, should go and see if I can pre-order it off Amazon, it's Feb I think.

Feenie · 25/01/2009 18:37

Ooh, 5th Feb! £8.57.

Feenie · 25/01/2009 18:39

New Nicci French 5th March - £7.79. Although I agree with a previous poster, theirs are a bit hit and miss lately.
