Mine was Prince Caspian.
And my most recent was the King of the Gyptians in The Dark Materials.
Show how I've changed. It used to be a boy King. Now it's a fatherly type.

Guy Charlton was also from the Sadlers wells series.
He was landed, rode, a gentlemanly mountain climber and I don't think he was considered bad looking either.
He could rescue me anytime

oxocube · 25/01/2009 20:36

nkf - you have reminded me of Dr Bill (I think that was his name) from the Sue Barton nursing series. I had a major crush on him

mysterymoniker · 25/01/2009 20:39

Adam Bede

nkf · 25/01/2009 20:48

Sue Barton. I haven't thought of her for years.
And yes Adam Bede. So noble. One wanted to rescue him from that awful mother.

Oh yes, poor Adam , how angry I felt with Hetty Sorrel, blighting his life with her carelessness.

nkf · 25/01/2009 20:58

She doesn't blight his life. He's very happy with Dinah.

I might have to go and re-read it. I love that book.

But he spends much of the book yearning fruitlessly for Hetty, NKF! Pretty blighting in my view. And I always felt he settled rather for Dinah, although she was clearly the rational choice.

nkf · 25/01/2009 21:04

Hetty wants him at first until she has her silly head turned. And there's something so convincing about his heroic love for a daft little thing. I always thought Dinah a was a terrific charaCter so I'd want him to appreciate her too.

Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye

mummy2benji · 25/01/2009 23:27

Keep being reminded of books I haven't read for ages... I loved the Sue Barton books and Flambards! I had a crush on the nerdy one in Flambards - Will, was it?

womblingfree · 26/01/2009 22:45

Def Rochester.
Also had a weird fascination with the Mayor of Casterbridge when I was quite young and my Dad was working his way through Hardy's books.

seeker · 26/01/2009 22:46

Ginger Hebblethwaite.

And I bet I'm alone in this bizarre confession!

bronze · 27/01/2009 09:30

I always quite liked Algy. I have huge quantities of the books in boxes in my attic. I really must get them down and have a reread.

seeker · 27/01/2009 13:00

I liked Algy too - but I felt he was a bit out of my reach. Ginger was more accessible.

IorekByrnison · 27/01/2009 13:03

Think it might have been Will Ladislaw

procrastinatingparent · 27/01/2009 13:07

Biggles.

Although in retrospect I think he was gay.

And I am still in love with Lord Peter Wimsey.

And about every 6 months I re-read my Sue Barton collection and sigh over Bill Barry.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 27/01/2009 13:11

Ged (and his best friend) from A Wizard of Earthsea

seeker · 27/01/2009 13:24

I'm still in love with Lord Peter too - I'm sure he could handle the pair of us!

I'm sure Biggles was gay, but was it Algy or Bertie?

prideandprejudice · 27/01/2009 13:27

Love this thread!

Will in Flambards, definitely. Still am...DH definitely the nerdy one out of him and his brother!
Mr Darcy, obviously.

janeite · 27/01/2009 13:27

My first fictional crush was Julian - still got a bit of a "thing" for him I must admit! Although I am convinced he was actually more like 36 than the 14 or 15 or whatever he was supposed to be.

Now - it's Roland of Gilead from King's Dark Tower series, Strider before he becomes Aragorn (though I wouldn't say no to Aragorn either) and Colonel Brandon.

seeker · 27/01/2009 13:30

Janeite - not Julian "Oh no Ann and George, you can't come down to the beach at midnight to look for the robbers, you'll sprain your ankle. Stay here and pout the ginger beer and leave the work to us boys" Julian?

Oh and I had forgotten Meryon Fairbrass!

troutpout · 27/01/2009 13:32

Mr pinkwhistle

Brer Rabbit

Aslan.... I think love him more now he's got that lovely voice in the film

Peter Pevensey.....oohh

George (fellow tomboy)

Mr rochester

Jo..little women

Jem (to kill a mockingbird)..fantasy dad was Atticus

janeite · 27/01/2009 13:33

Yep - the very one Seeker! I have been ill in bed for a few days and yesterday I chain-read three Famous Five books.

The boy has always got:

  • pockets full of money for buying ginger beer and high tea (the idea of high tea appeals so much to the glutton in me);
  • a spare jersey to put around Anne's shoulders when she gets cold or frightened
  • a spare piece of rope
  • a piece of paper and a pencil

What else could a girl ask for?!!

troutpout · 27/01/2009 13:34
