Mine was Prince Caspian.
And my most recent was the King of the Gyptians in The Dark Materials.
Show how I've changed. It used to be a boy King. Now it's a fatherly type.

God, that's weird. I read that and thought 'I can't even remember what the Flambards theme was' and to my surprise and not a little mortification it popped straight into my head. I'm embarrassed to say I think I even bought the record. Now need to slink away and die quietly under a bush somewhere.

janeite, love your staffroom story! Take comfort - a friend of mine did something similar years ago, only she was talking about (whispers) 'vaginal examinations'. Except she didn't whisper and the whole room was suddenly quiet.

Stayingsunnygirl · 30/01/2009 10:13

I think my first was one of the older boys from the Lone Pine series - not Tom, who married Jenny in the end, but the one who married Peta - I can't remember his name and all my Lone Pine books are still in storeage.

Apart from him, I'm joining the many who've said Gilbert Blythe, Dr Bill Barry, Lord Peter Wimsey, Aragorn, and to a certain extent, Jack Maynard from the Chalet school series, though I'm not sure I could have coped with having 11 children by him - I'd have banished him to the spare room after the triplets, I think! Even now, though, I do fantasise about marrying one of the doctors from the Sanatorium and becoming part of the life of the Chalet school - and friends with Jo, of course.

Stayingsunnygirl · 30/01/2009 10:48

I've just been and checked, and the chap from the Lone Pine series was David Morton - though I was reminded of Jonathan Warrender, who was quite fanciable too.

AnnVan · 30/01/2009 11:58

Aaaw I loved the Wells book. Very muc agree about the characters being believable. Totally loved them and have been trying to get hold of copies for a couple of years now. Would definitely love to revisit.

Tortington · 30/01/2009 12:00

it would have to be Aragorn i think.

bronze · 31/01/2009 11:42

Jonathan Warrender was a bit of a geek wasnt he

I quite like Peters cousin? The younger one from white gates.

bronze · 31/01/2009 11:44

Charles I think it was who married Trudy/Trixie? the vet

nkf · 31/01/2009 13:49

I think I once had a bit of a soft spot for the gallant Reepicheep. Do I qualify for a Channel 5 documentary?

Foxinsox, I think you're talking about Cold Comfort Farm.

My first love was Dick in Famous Five.

VintageGardenia · 31/01/2009 21:43

Nooooo not Cold Comfort Farm - Flora ended up with Charles, not any of the Starkadders. Think she would have been a bit at the thought.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 01/02/2009 20:49

I have reread the first seven of the Wells series this weekend in the wake of DD1. One thing I DIDN'T recollect from first time round was the disturbingly macho subtext - her teenage males were disconcertingly keen to inflict corporal punishment on bolshie females - what was going on there fgs?

janeite · 01/02/2009 20:53

Lol. I haven't read them, so can't comment, sorry!

My local library failed me though: it didn't have any Flambards books.

blueshoes · 01/02/2009 21:48

Another one for Mr Rochester.

Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited

SniffyHock · 01/02/2009 21:50

I wanted Atticus Finch to be my dad/teacher - wasn't a romantic crush as such.

IdrisTheDragon · 01/02/2009 21:57

I love this thread

Sebastian was very dashing.

And have a soft spot for Patrick.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 02/02/2009 00:51

DD1 and I have now started rereading the Drina Ballerina books. Anyone remember those?

CJCregg · 02/02/2009 19:46

I don't, Lady G, but I just love your name. I was going to put Lord Silverbridge as one of my early crushes but it's a bit of a cheat as it was only really Anthony Andrews in the tv version. Have never, to my shame, read the books.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 02/02/2009 20:29

Don't be ashamed, just think of them as a treat still in store for you CJC .
They are really long, so good for long train journeys or to cheer up convalescence for instance.

CJCregg · 02/02/2009 23:21

I will do that! Might put a new slant on my West Wing addiction ...

nkf · 07/02/2009 19:29

I'm going to look out for the Flambards book. I wonder if the characters are loveable if you read them for the first time as adults.

For example, I recently read Swallows and Amazons for the first time and found it arch and a bit dull. But I know I would have loved it as a child. I also know that I will how be murdered by fans of the book.

NFK - thank you so much for reviving this thread: it's my favourite on MN ever I think!

I have got this bag as a public announcement of one of my fictional loves (they don't seem to make a Julian Famous Five one!).

Countingthegreyhairs · 07/02/2009 20:30

Ahhhh [deep sigh ] Flambards ... I lost my heart to Dick the groom when (after a night of nookie I recall - but could be wrong) he leapt bareback on to an old carthorse and galloped off across the fields, lit by the moon, leaping over fences as he went ...

double sigh...

and don't get me started on Mr Rochester ...

flaminhell · 07/02/2009 20:42

There is only one, Dirty Dancing, Johnny Castle the quintessential bad boy with a soft side. There has never been a man yet that has made me feel like I want to dance like he has.

ShrinkingViolet · 07/02/2009 20:47

mine would have to be the Hardy Boys (either or both ), then Sebastian, then most of the Geoorgette Heyer heros. Plus a big girl crush on Jo (Chalet School - I so wanted to go there).
