Anyone read this? I just finished it, liked some elements, but thought it was a bit heavy-handed. The 'surprise' wasn't enough of a surprise ...

I quite enjoyed it. Yes, the end was a bit far-fetched, but overall it was an interesting book. Especially loved the details re life in Soviet Russia and relationships based on basic need and survival.

I read it a while back, it was well written, but I was AMAZED that it was nominated for the Booker

Yeah, the 1984ish stuff was pretty involving. I'd agree it was well-written.

I think it's good that the Booker folks included a genre book ... but surely there must be better genre books out there?

I really enjoyed it, surprised myself, as I'd expected to pretty much hate it. The stuff on Stalinist society was very interesting (and disturbing). Working through the Booker longlist, NQC?
