Has anyone lese read this - just finished it for Book Club and loved it. Learnt so much I didnt know about the life of Chinese women in the 19th century - footbinding, their secret language (nu shu)and their low status within familes/society. Really beautiful writing - would def recommend it!

just finished reading this. It's a book that has made a great impression on me, and I felt I needed to share that. I'm not sure I'd say I loved it as the sections on footbinding are gruesome.

It's a book I feel any woman should read - to remind us of how lucky we are and of what really matters in life.

Good point Tatt - we are discussing it this week at Book Club and the discussion leader has sent round some links to sites on footbinding - with v graphic and horrific pictures. I'd heard about footbinding but had no idea about the long term impact it had and the lifetime of pain and discomfort it could cause. The book also helped me put my very minor gripes re MIL into perspective! (And I inadvertantly referred to sex as 'bed business' the other day which caused much eyebrow raising from DH!)
