Anyone read this? It's pretty good ...

I've got it to read - my bookclub read it a while ago but I couldn't make that meeting and still haven't read it! Must get round to it.

Oh dear, NQC - second thread in a night that I have to confess to disliking a book you're loving... some really bad copy-editing completely destroyed this book for me: a whole section where she had clearly changed her mind about whose point of view she was seeing the scene from (pls excuse), and it had been badly corrected. Sorry.

Clearly I need to CAT you to find some books that we loved in common.

I was sadly disappointed. I felt that it under explored what was potentially a very interesting subject matter. Shame.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/01/2009 07:36

Well, it didn't really explore the clothing thing as much as it might have.

Which scene, FlossieT? I enjoyed this book less than (I'm currently enjoying) the Hensher, so am less bothered about criticism - and anyway, different books for different people (and circumstances, and weather, and watever!).

Do you know, I can't remember quite what was happening because it was obscured for me by the bad editing.... that's so sad, isn't it? It was a scene between Vivien and her uncle, and the pronouns were totally messed up, in a way that made it clear that she (Grant) had changed her mind about how she was going to narrate the novel and from whose p.o.v. - but it hadn't been properly bedded in.

I didn't much like it either, and I suggested it for my book group to read. Seemed to have cliches in it, phrases that seemed out of place and really stuck in my mind and put me off, out of all proportion really.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/01/2009 17:42

I totally missed that bit, probably thankfully.

Can you go back and talk about your complaints about the Hensher? I finished the book, and now want to whinge about inconsistencies ...
