Yep, the Indian book. I loved it too. The ending didn't surprise me...but I just kept wondering if I was reading it wrong.

I'm currently going through Ann Patchett's books.

Bad name but 'The Magician's Assistant' was great - you have to get through a crap beginning but it turns into a book about the strength of women and I loved it. 'Run' and 'Bel Canto' are also good.
