Having read both of Chimamanda Nkozie Adichie's books, I've then since discovered Chinua Achebe and now want to read some more African fiction. Any suggestions for books/authors?

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is set in the Congo in the 1960s. It's a great book but not by an african author.

Peter Godwin - When the Crocodile Eats the Sun & Mukiwa
Aiden Hartley - Zanzibar Chest
Shirley Goodness and Mercy - Chris van Wyk

Doris Lessing - The Grass Is Singing
Barbara Trapido - Frankie and Stankie
Hilary Mantel - A Change of Climate

The Lessing is the best of these, I think, but please tell me more about Chinua Achebe ....

I am marking an exam at the moment where one of the set texts is Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah. Fascinating fictional representation of post-colonial Nigeria.

Robert Ruark - 'Uhuru' Swahili for Freedom. About the Mau mau uprising in Kenya. Fantastic story. Also wrote The Honey Badher and Poor No More. Brilliant tales.

There is some African fiction here and non-fiction here. It's a Nigerian website but you can probably order from your local bookshop.
