By Alice Sebold (she of lovely bones fame)

I bought a copy last week.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 16/10/2008 13:26

Have you started it yet?

Yes - I'm a quick reader so finished it at the weekend. I quite liked it.

janeite · 16/10/2008 17:16

I bought it for dp when it first came out. I thought it was absolutely rubbish, though I really liked "The Lovely Bones".

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 10:42

I'm not sure what I think of it.
In places it makes me quite uncomfortable, but so did The Lovely Bones.

I started it last week but skipped most of it, so read the first and last chapters.

Loved ' The Lovely Bones' but, to be honest, thought this was a bit boring.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 21/10/2008 10:10

I've got about two thirds of the way through. It's not pulling me to finish it like most books but I feel like I have to in the same morbid way people rubberneck at car crashes.

I just found it hard work! I enjoyed the 'lovely bones' in that it was uncomfortable reading but a fascinating take on things, IYKWIM.

I felt, with this book, she was trying to be the Madonna of her genre - trying a bit too hard to shock.

Was glad to finish it tbh.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 21/10/2008 10:35

I loved the lovely bones, except the whole spiritual sex bit, that was weird and too far, I felt. This whole book feels the same as that part to me.

And...

Although she manages to show just how very fucked-up every character in the book is (!), I didn't think she really justified or made sense of why she actually killed her mother.

Perhaps we are meant to be left feeling frustrated by the sheer futility of it?!

fullmOOOOOWHOOOOOnfiend · 21/10/2008 10:38

I was very disappointed, though I did romp through it. There was none of the 'finding beauty in shitty circs' which I felt shone through in Lovely Bones.
I got the whole mother/daughter love/hate thing, but man, she was a fucked-up lady!

janeite · 21/10/2008 18:03

Yes the sex scene in TLB was ridiculous; a big flaw in an otherwise really good book.

nuttymum303 · 21/10/2008 19:20

[cry] I never knew it was in yesterday's paper. I want this book. I have read The Lovely Bones. I have Lucky on my TBR pile as well.

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 21/10/2008 21:24

It is really not a patch on the Lovely Bones.

I liked Lucky less, and this one far less.

Actually - does anyone actually enjoy reading Alice Sebold???

nuttymum303 · 22/10/2008 08:36

I have only read 1 of hers. So it will be interesting to read the other 2 as well.

scorpio1 · 22/10/2008 12:04

Which book am I asking for again lol? I have read The Lovely Bones. I have Lucky on my TBR list. Which means I would be asking for The Almost Moon?

Rachyanne · 22/01/2009 13:48
