The Red Tent....by Anita Diamant

I picked this up in a charity store for 30p and by the 'shape' of the book, I thought 'loads have read this'.. dog eared, spine broken, folded pages, food stains...

I enjoyed it so much altho have never heard of this author before and wanted to know if anyone has read any of her other stuff and whether they are along the same scene...

Highly recommended.

Funny because on the same day that I picked that particular book up, I also nabbed Empress Orchid by Anchii Min, and read that with gusto as well. Very feminine angle etc, but that is also drenched in history and tradition of that era and area. Then I started Red Tent and thought what a coincidence that I should pick up two books ad lib that are so 'similar'. Also recommend, beautifully written and informative about that dynasty.

I'll look out for Empress Orchid. I haven't read anything very good recently so would love to find something I can't put down. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've read Anita Diamant's other books. They are quite different from The red tent. She's written a selection of essays on being jewish, amongst other things as well as some more fiction, but in my opinion not as interesting as TRT. Look at Amazon for her other books.

Just finished "Away" by Amy Bloom which was fantastic, in case you are looking for a good read (set in 1924 New York)

I tend to get caught up in 'perspectives' when I find a good 'stream'. I've just got another by Nora Loft 'The Kings Pleasures' (am crapp at British History) hope to be enlightened a bit. Anyone know of any other 'bible era' books like that? Am not religious in the slightest, but lived in Israel most of my life (no, not Jewish) therefore familar with the traditions, places, names, rituals... It just 'did' it for me...(plus I love strength of females/sisterhood in chauvinistic settings) ha ha ha....

People who read The Red Tent with me also liked Stone Diaries by Carol Shields but I have no idea what it is about.

Dissenting voice .... I thought TRT was OK but nothing remarkable. The story was gripping, and I'll go back to re-read the story of Jacob in the Bible, but I didn't like the style of writing, which I found clunky. It did make two of our book group cry, though.

funny i have it here in my room got it as a gift and have never heard of her or the book so have left it here wondering about it. will ready it now!

Haven't read it but, but the Stone Diaries are brilliant, as is unless by the same author, so will have to give it a go

I haven't read red tent yet... but Last Days of Dogtown I just read, and it was very good- I really enjoyed it.
