I really enjoyed Life of Pi.

Ishiguro's Remains of the Day.

aaargh I just wrote the most eloquent appeal in favour of Midnight's Children, and MN's server update ATE IT

BUT anyway. I do not think we should be poncing about on the back of marketing shortlists. I think, in our current climate, we should be reading:

William Dean Howell (Silas Lapham)

Theodore Dreiser

and, above all, James Baldwin (Go Tell It On The Mountain (and everything else))

or Hazard of New Fortunes (also Howell)

or Trollope.

Actually just a whole lot of Trollope. Cynical money-squeezing indeterminately-sourced robber barons. Yep.

I just love 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' (can't remember the author though) - this book had a real effect on my life.
