last week, was really excited
to have joined one as I have wanted to for ages, finally found one. We read The Whaleboat House which was IMHO a great read, but the book club meeting was v. disappointing.
Maybe I just didn't know what to expect, although many friends go to book clubs, chat about the book for about half an hour then mingle and chat about general topics and just enjoy a get together.

Firstly, it was very high=brow, the women were a little snooty, I only knew one of them. They live in the country and I live in the town and anyone who lives in the town is considered a chav or gypo it seems.

The questions (which the host had printed from a website) were difficult to comprehend. We talked about the book for nearly 2 hours, and when anyone deviated, we were scorned and told to go back to discussing the book. IT was alsmost as if we were discussing for discussions sake, just to keep going until the end. I was glad to leave.

I will not be put off totally, going to try the next one and see how that goes.

Yay, i vote for getting pissed at book club too.

Can you start up your own Katie? Get some like minded mates round and set your own rules?

Book groups can be fab but can be horrendous when they get competitive.

MMJ are you in my book club by chance

newpup · 11/08/2008 17:13

That does not sound much fun. At my group we do spend a long time discussing the book but then we deviate quite a lot A book club should be fun, maybe you should find another or start your own.

I always get a real buzz out of mine!

10 minutes? I think we average about 3 and a half. And that's normally only because someone's partner/husband sends a rude text to ask if we're drunk yet!
