Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann

I was given this book to read by my Dad who said it had been very popular at his book group. Has anyone else read it? And what did they think? Is it worth a read?

I rather liked it - but I couldn't have read it for a book group, as it's one of those slow, steady, immerse-yourself deep reads that you don't want to put a deadline on. Good for a long summer (or jury service).
