For me it would have to be "On Chesil beach" I really enjoyed "Atonement" and had high expectaions for this but the end was an anticlimax. Pun intended.

Everyone raves about Lord of the Rings, ot Terry Pratchett or Harry Potter and I think they are all complete pants! And I have tried believe me. Give me Enid Blyton or a nice gritty novel about serial killers anytime! Actually I think I am reasonably well read - I think I just don't DO fantasy....

The Memory Keepers Daughter, it fizzled out, very disappointed twas I as I had spent about an hour choosing it for my Far East trip. Also The Devil Wears Prada had no storyline, not that I thought it would be great but there was a certain amount of hype!

claricebeansmum · 07/07/2008 20:57

Lord of the Rings
Snow falling on Cedars
Captains wotsits mandolin

ArcticRoll · 07/07/2008 20:58

Time Traveller's Wife
The Book Thief

A Prayer for Owen Meany (I think)

Many hours of my life I'll never get back.

I only got to the end so I could give myself the pleasure of ripping the fecking book to pieces.

God it was dreadful.

nkf · 07/07/2008 20:59

Captain Correlli's Mandolin. I didn't finish it.

georgiemama · 07/07/2008 21:01

The Lovely Bones. NO ta. And weird.

LittleBella · 07/07/2008 21:01

I've just read Anne Enright's "The Gathering"

It was OK but it seemed to me that she hadn't developed it as much as she set it up and it got rave reviews. I got to the end of it wondering where the rest of the novel was.

JaneHH · 07/07/2008 21:10

"The Golden Notebook" by Doris Lessing (JaneHH prepares to be put on the ducking stool for heresy)

AbstractMouse · 07/07/2008 21:11

The Secret History Donna Tartt

Onlyaphase · 07/07/2008 21:13

Agree with Articroll - The Book Thief was not as good as it could have been. Was it translated from another language? May have been better in the original.

Lio · 07/07/2008 21:13

The Golden Notebook - nobody in my reading group even finished it.
That Peter Ackroyd one, Hawsmoor.

The Oliver Readers - the end was just soooooo rushed and felt incomplete.
I second Captain Correlli's Mandolin, didn't finish it either.

taipo · 07/07/2008 21:22

Another vote for The Lovely Bones

spicemonster · 07/07/2008 21:23

I have just finished The Steep Approach to Garbadale by Iain Banks and it was a massive disappointment. It needed some serious editorial input and I got the feeling they just didn't dare mess with his 'genius'

ByTheSea · 07/07/2008 21:24

Time Traveller's Wife. I never did finish it.

Troutpout · 07/07/2008 21:24

I third Captain Corelli's mandolin
Cloud Atlas
I second Atonement
The Alchemist

MmeBovary · 07/07/2008 21:25

I loved the Lovely Bones!

BigGitDad · 07/07/2008 21:26

Cloud Atlas disappointed me so many people told me it was so brilliant I think I was expecting too much in the end.

Niecie · 07/07/2008 21:27

We need to Talk about Kevin. Nearly gave up after the first couple of chapters and I almost never give up on books.

Lio · 07/07/2008 21:28

Wuthering Heights
Wide Sargasso Sea
Catcher in the Rye
The Great Gatsby

(But I loved Polo and Riders )

calsworld · 07/07/2008 21:32

The Memory Keepers Daughter, very disappointing, interesting storyline, but so much more that could have been done with it,

policywonk · 07/07/2008 21:34

Anything by Flann O'Brien (sp.?). I just don't GET IT.
