Did age 17 has won a prize and has been asked to choose a book. I’d be delighted for any recommendations please. She’s girly and quite into arts and cultural stuff (drama, dance etc) but probably going to study science. Liked Harry Potter and likes watching horror films but hasn’t been a big reader recently for various reasons. I’m keen to get something she will enjoy she’s not into romance.

Thank you for any suggestions.

If she likes horror and Harry Potter, she might enjoy something a bit dystopian, with a fantasy element. Maybe The Thieves Gambit by Kayvion Lewis…?

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

These are great suggestions, and make me wonder if she might also enjoy Klara and the Sun, also by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Agree with Noughts and Crosses - it's an amazing story, has really stayed with me.
Other ideas:
How to kill your family by Bella Mackie
Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

If she likes horror, then I highly recommend The Haunting Season and The Winter Spirits - they're collections of short ghost stories set at Christmas time - I loved both of them and a collection of short stories may be better for her if she's not been reading a lot recently.

My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt - a defining work of dark academia, exploring how the pursuit of beauty and knowledge can warp into moral ruin.

Agree with The Secret History.

How about a book of short stories-maybe horror ones.

At least, that way, there is bound to be something in there that she likes.

If she's interested in science, Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything is a wonderful, gripping tour of scientific history. It's a book to put into the hands of any intelligent young person. Would probably be my desert island book.
